1. CPI is a wrong deflator to use when comparing to GDP growth

2. Wages != Compensation

xentronium commented on Ask HN: Were you happy moving your API from REST to GraphQL?    · Posted by u/glenscott1
xentronium · 7 years ago
Our front end engineers were extremely happy. Me personally, as a backend engineer, not as much, but it isn't too bad.

There are some quirks (error handling), performance issues (e.g. fixing n+1 queries) and DOS concerns, but again, it isn't all that bad.

(we're using rails/graphql-ruby on backend | react/relay on frontend)

xentronium commented on Regarding the Em Dash   themillions.com/2018/01/r... · Posted by u/samclemens

I'm incredibly happy that the em dash is gaining the attention it deserves. However, if honest—I am also a little upset that the good people the comments section are tending towards placing white-space around each dash and the text it forms an abutment with.

This space is not needed.

xentronium · 8 years ago
Depends on typography traditions. In Russian, em-dash in the middle of a sentence is always typeset with short spaces. We also rarely use en-dashes (I think there are maybe two cases when it is allowed: in date ranges like 1940–1945 and as a bullet point in lists).

> The "last mile" is a utility, and by its very nature will always result in monopolistic control.

This is THE central point. Everyone saying that they would be OK with the latest FCC regs if there were only more competition need to consider this. In what bizarro world would anyone actually want ISPs competing for the last mile?

You can easily have up to 1 gbit symmetric internet connection in Russia for $10 because of that competition.

It's not rocket science, guys, US ISPs suck because your regulation killed all the competitors, and your solution is what, more regulation?

xentronium commented on Concerns about Bitcoin's energy use are overblown   bloomberg.com/view/articl... · Posted by u/w-ll
brndnmtthws · 8 years ago
Let's also acknowledge that the "sky is falling" proclamations around Bitcoin mining energy use are based on numbers that aren't even close to accurate. Current network hash rate is about 12EH/s, and an Antminer S9 does about 14TH/s at 1372W. Thus,

    (12000000THs / 14THs) * 1372W = 1,176,000,000W
Which is about 1.176GW. The article cites 8.27TW, which is off by several orders of magnitude.

QED.

Edit: numbers maybe not so far off after all, as it appears to say 8.27TWh/year now.

Are you confusing tw with twhr/y?

And SaaS (Sex as a Service).

The day there's an app for people seeking prostitutes where both parties leave stars and text reviews like Airbnb or Uber will be a weird day.

xentronium · 8 years ago
Well, not exactly an app, but some forums dedicated to reviews for courtesans are quite old.

I don't mind the principles of it -- and I don't mind it in macOS. At least the menu is always there, the problem with unity is that it is hidden and will slowly appear when you hover the mouse on top. It's really hard to aim for what I want when I actually have to access a function on the menu.

I am using KDE on anything I can, and I have no problem with them doing things like the global menu. KDE tends to get things right to my taste.

xentronium · 8 years ago
There is a setting for menu being always on.

I thought about it, but I'm way too shy for that.

Not like it would lead to anywhere either, you know. :P

Two years of teaching university, MSc in computing, love of automation, combinatiorial optimization without any significant amount of deep math skill, circuit design, gate array stuff, low-level CPU optimization stuff, hardware counters, microcontrollers, SQLite, Julia language, C, shell, a bunch more programming languages, basic CSS and HTML, Mustache templates, Linux. No JavaScript. The whole of luisant.ca is done by hand and from scratch, so you can see what I can do with that. Also statistics.

I'm uncommonly silly and not at all serious, while still standing up for what I believe is right, even if everyone disagrees with me. I do integrity though and while I can stand my ground, I will yield to good evidence any day.

I wear goofy clothes to work, usually very colourful stuff. Don't expect conformity.

And I have no love greater than the one for the cause of nature conservation, and all research that goes with that.

That's about me in a nutshell.

Told you nothing will come of it. :P

Man, just post a link to CV like you're advised and let good things happen to you. If they don't, you lose nothing, but if they do, you got something out of your effort.
xentronium commented on Chekhov: “Cultured people must, in my opinion, satisfy the following conditions”   medium.com/the-polymath-p... · Posted by u/_chu

This letter appears to be a drawn out detailed set of insults to his older brother. Maybe cultured isn't the best translation. Is this what we in the US would have called "classy" back then?
xentronium · 8 years ago
Chekhov had this very weird and dry sense of humor. Some jokes would certainly look like insults to a random observer.

In this case, though, I believe he was actually frank, if blunt, but well meaning (his brother had issues with alcohol).
