some nonzero chance I'll be killed in a surprise volcanic eruption

Why would you compare an unpredictable natural risk with one stemming from human behavior and government policy? This is like saying speeding limits are a bad idea because some people are killed by lightning.

x86_64Ubuntu · 6 months ago
Because when we use a natural risk, we remove the fact that it's actual policy put forth and implemented by humans. Otherwise, the ideology will always be brought into question, while volcanos don't have an ideology that can conflict with itself.

IBM will use any excuse to justify firing people over 50 years old. So "DEI purge" is just an excuse, nothing more.

Everyone I know there knows this was coming after Nov 2024. IBM just wants to hide the number and age of the people being fired.

Yeah they kind of got burned by the "dinobabies" comment from a while back.

It's surprising to see how many people still don't get this. None of what happened so far was in any way surprising. You can literally go right now and read up what else they have planned. We're in for a wild ride.

They get it, they just know it looks bad so they act as if they are surprised.

I never understood running until long ago I was running for some school event and just got into that grove where ... it didn't hurt to run and I felt like I could go forever.

How these guys do it for that long and that fast still amazes me, but I felt like i got a little glimpse into how it works.

x86_64Ubuntu · 10 months ago
I've always wondered what happens psychologically and physically when you hit that state where you can pretty much go forever. It's like I begin daydreaming and I forget that I feel like I'm about to die from the running. One thing I noticed was that it never happened before the 1st mile, it was always after mile 2 that I would mentally drift off.

> Under qualified immunity, government officials can be held accountable for violating someone’s rights only if a court has previously ruled that it was “clearly established” those precise actions were unconstitutional.

Who made this rule?! So a court would have to rule on each and every possible abuse of the law by a government official??

x86_64Ubuntu · 10 months ago
From what I've seen, it has to have been "clearly established" before meaning that unless there is an incident already labeling the act unconstitutional, no dice for the poor lady. It's how you make it so that as society evolves, officers can't be held accountable for new acts.

They were also well planned and intentional. J6 seemed much more like spur-of-the-moment mob action, at least from my armchair.
x86_64Ubuntu · a year ago
But it wasn't, I remember seeing people on Facebook talking about J6 before it happened. It's kind of weird to see the minimization of J6 in real time.

I keep hearing people crow about how Africa is going to get re-colonized by China, but I just don't see it. For instance, in the last 50 years, America and her allies have:

-Overthrown Gaddafi and destabilized Libya in the process, leading to million of small arms washing into the Sahel. Jihadists groups have killed hundreds of thousands with those weapons, further destabilizing the region.

-Funded and backed murderous dictators like Hissene Habre who tortured, killed, and raped roughly 40k innocent Chadians.

-Other dictators that have held unto power with implicit/explicit American support include Mobutu, Amin, Barre, etc., and I'm not going to go into the atrocities they've committed.

-Continue to meddle in African countries, including their implicit support for the overthrow of popularly-elected governments like Egypt's Muhammad Morsi, and Congo's Lumumba, after which the country fell apart .

These are just a few examples off the top of my head. No matter how much you scaremonger about China, all they do is transfer technology, build infrastructure, and assist with explicit approval of local governments.

Do they have evil intent in the long-run? Who knows?

But, given their track record so far (of going heads down and building stuff) and the West's history of plain maliciousness, it'd be stupid to suggest anyone shouldn't partner with China.

Any time you hear an assumed Westerner talking about China's rising presence in Africa, it reminds me of an abuser whose love has left him for good. The speech is riddled with "he won't love you like I do", "He doesn't really love you", "He's actually worse than me".

Cats and dogs have more rights than other animals for seemingly arbitrary reasons too. At the end of the day, its all whatever we decide is matters.
x86_64Ubuntu · a year ago
It's long been known that certain animals are far more charismatic than others. Dogs and cats should never suffer, while thing like rats, mosquitos and wild boars are to be terminated on sight. Things such as hippos, squirrels and food sources are somewhere in between.
