I feel you. The UX is a gigantic mess. Navigating between jobs and builds is also a terrible experience.

Oh man. Start a manual job, wait for it to appear in the UI. 10 minutes later, it finally appears. Or just refresh the page manually immediately after starting the job, and there it is...

GitHub Actions is such a pain to use just because of how sluggish it feels. I hope they’ll improve performance.

It also continuously fails to scroll down in the log view when watching output of a ci job live, and has done for years. It's so annoying that I made a userscript to force scrolling: https://github.com/wheybags/userscripts/blob/main/github_act...

Possibly, nothing. Codec development is slow and expensive. Free codecs only came along at all because Google decided to subsidize development but that became possible only 15 years or so after MPEG was born, and it's hardly a robust strategy. Plus free codecs were often built by acquiring companies that had previously been using IP licensing as a business model rather than from-scratch development.

It's not just about new codecs. There's also people making products that would use codecs just deciding not to because of the patent hassle.

Enough codecs out there. Just no adoption.

Yes, because mpeg got there first, and now their dominance is baked into silicon with hardware acceleration. It's starting to change at last but we have a long way to go. That way would be a lot easier if their patent portfolio just died.

As someone who hasn't had any exposure to the human stories behind mpeg before, it feels to me like it's been a force for evil since long before 2020. Patents on h264, h265, and even mp3 have been holding the industry back for decades. Imagine what we might have if their iron grip on codecs was broken.

> act as a drag on the ecosystem as a whole, making it very hard to get any new features

I dont see this as an issue though. Terminals are pretty much a solved problem, they dont need any new features. IMO it makes more sense to spend effort on improving tmux<->terminal interop rather than adding fancy graphics protocols that we dont actually need.

I'm sorry, but this is selling good engineers very short. If you didn't nest your utils folder 8 folders deep, it seems pretty obvious that one should check the utils folder before writing another utility function. This stuff should also be caught in code reviews. Maybe the new guy didn't know that util function existed, but surely you did when you reviewed their MR? Obviously mistakes like that can happen, but I've found that to be the exception rather than the rule, even in some of the gnarlier codebases I've worked in.

I wouldn't say you should explicitly check, necessarily. More like, you go to implement the widget and when you open the appropriate file to get started, it's already there.

Just let me donate directly to firefox. It's seriously about time this happened. Split off from all the Mozilla bs, it has its own independent management, and runs on donations, same as Thunderbird.

I even theorise they could cut the Google funding. There are so many people who would donate to firefox, but don't, because 1) they dont need the money, and 2) the money wouldn't go to firefox anyway. I even remember talking to a long time Mozilla employee at fosdem, and him telling me donating was pointless for those reasons.

They're not a good steward of this project and imo they should let it fly free. The problem is Mozilla would die without it because nobody cares about anything else they do, so their donations would plummet.
