well_actulily commented on NYC's Upset Election Was Drawn Along an Odd Line: Car Ownership   jalopnik.com/1895759/nyc-... · Posted by u/rntn

Jalopnik's ownership history is as spotted and confusing as any web media brand out there. It was part of the Gizmodo group for years, which was bought by private equity and split into separate themed components merged with other media holding companies bought by the same private equity. Four months ago it was sold to something called Static Media, yet another media holding company that I've never heard of, but given the about us page showing a whole lot of VPs and C-suites who look about 25 or so, I'm not sure I would expect this one to last any longer than all the previous owners.

Notably the litigation-induced bankruptcy of Gawker Media (of which Jalopnik was a part) in 2016 is the reason why Jalopnik wound up owned by these private equity groups. Most of these publications are shells of their former selves, but I suppose it could be argued that a lot of written media has gone that way—Gawker-associated and otherwise.

Used it for a 120 day trip to Asia, but the UI got slow after adding more than 30 days of itinerary.

Its still okay to use, I just had to break the trip up into individual countries, but was hoping it wouldn't clog up so much.

We used it for a two week trip to Singapore and Japan last year, and yeah, I agree the app performance for packed trips is pretty rough.

If they cannot generate enough profits to even justify holding on to the real estate rather than putting the real estate to some other use, is that meaningfully different from failing?
well_actulily · 8 months ago
Anecdotally, but it seems like a lot of these sites that once hosted these department or big box stores don't wind up getting redeveloped. At best, they might be home to a Spirit Halloween for a couple months out of a year. Having to compete with online retailers is certainly a challenge, but it doesn't seem like what private equity does to these legacy companies benefits anyone but their investors' desire for short-term profits.

Not really considering Versailles is in the suburbs of Paris, whilst Bletchly is not a suburb of London but next to Milton Keynes.
well_actulily · a year ago
Sure, but if Versailles is 30-45 minutes outside of central Paris by train, and Bletchley Park is about an hour or so outside of London, I'd venture that the extra ~hour round trip of travel time isn't that meaningful to most tourists.
well_actulily commented on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?   sports.yahoo.com/paris-ol... · Posted by u/phkx

In Paris they didn't want to build a white elephant swimming venue that will never get filled outside of the Olympics. So instead they converted an indoor stadium, the Paris La Défense Arena that is normally used for rugby and concerts.

You can see in the timelapse video here[1] the pool being built above the surface. They built it to a depth of 2.15m, the minimum required is 2m, but the recommended depth is 3m.

I can only assume that making it deeper would have cost more, and perhaps reduced the sightlines from the stands as the pool would have been higher in the arena?

And similarly for Los Angeles, the current proposal is to have swimming events at SoFi, a ~70,000 seat NFL stadium.

It goes beyond that. Three of the authors have east-asian last names.

I understand that many people from east asia have a given name in their native language and an english sounding name that they often choose themselves.

If those three authors did chose their english names, then they too fall into the same category of parents who chose a variation of Katherine.

This phenomena also occurs in the transgender community; people put a lot of thought and intention choosing their new names only to wind up surrounded by other people who also landed on the same name, often for similar reasons. There's even a whole subreddit specifically for transfeminine people who are named some variation of Lily: https://www.reddit.com/r/LilyIsTrans/

How sustainable can that be? desalination is probably the best choice since you wont fuck up other ecosystems by removing water from them.
well_actulily · a year ago
You still have the potential to fuck up marine and littoral ecosystems if you're discharging concentrated brine back into the ocean willy-nilly, though.

This seems trivially easy to circumvent. For example, take your 3/4 song that's 160 bpm and call it a 6/8 song that's 80 bpm. Done.

As I understand, in Las Vegas, as long as you do not use a device to aid with card counting (mind/mental only), it is legal. Is that still true?
well_actulily · 2 years ago
Sure, it's "legal"—but so is them banning you from playing blackjack or tresspassing you from their property.
