Unlike in China, where they do presently escrow keys to the government for mass surveillance.

That’s because Apple still makes their hardware in China & America. But not in the UK.

No, the UK is a democratic country that is voting to reduce privacy.

A massive company in a foreign country affecting the laws of your own is anti-democratic.

Democracy doesn't mean privacy.

Are you sure the UK is a democratic country?

The UK and China are not comparable. China is the worlds most populous country (for now). The UK has a population of under 70m. China is a totalitarian regime where even an imperfect freedom is preferable to no freedom at all. The UK is a democratic country which should be upholding the right to privacy.

If Apple weakens crypto for the UK, it affects people in other countries as well. iMessage is not exactly popular in the UK, so it is disproportionately used for transatlantic communication compared to WhatsApp. If Apple complies with the law, they are violating the privacy of users in the US as well.

Furthermore, Apples phones are made in China. Apples phones are not made in the UK.

One thing that has occurred to me about these types of medications is men are seemingly more willing to lie than women about being on contraception. IMO that's just a reason to criminalize that type of deceptive behavior and not prevent people from having access to the drug.

I think this kind of factoid can get Americans really riled up, because of how we view real estate as an investment, and how by the 19th Century, we were breaking away from that model of "landed gentry" who get all the perks and governance (see "House of Lords", don't you know.)

Of course, for all our rugged individualism, we're now finding out that homeownership isn't all it's cracked up to be. I, for one, am really happy renting my apartment, because a lot of maintenance and landscaping is done for me, and the amenities that come along with it are simply included in the cost, whether I use them or not. Owners tell me I'm throwing my money away, but it's a matter of perspective, I think.

I think that I learned a lot while viewing "Downton Abbey" and I suppose it's a somewhat faithful perspective on how a large manor house operates. I mean, it's amazing how this one family owns all the land, like a town in itself, with all the help downstairs, plus tenants who work the land; it's a whole economic system in itself. And I can see the benefit in having one owner who does the management, and lets the servants, employees, and tenants worry about things other than the land itself. I think that has benefits.

Now I don't profess to know much about how the feudal systems worked, hundreds of years ago, but I suppose that progress means we don't have fiefdoms anymore (good?) and we don't have oaths of fealty anymore (or do we?) and even though people call me "Sir Knight", I don't ride a horse and I don't rescue damsels in distress or go on crusades.

Perhaps I could purchase an inch of land in Scotland and become a Lord!

Over the last 3 years, Earning $XX per year in appreciation, $XX per year by renting the extra rooms, $XX per year from paying off the mortgage automatically, and $XX due to the lower monthly total payments compared to renting for a total of $80k/year in earnings is definitely worth mowing the lawn a dozen times a year. I haven’t even mentioned the tax deductions, or non-monetary benefits either.

Homeownership in America, assuming you paid for an inspection and didn’t buy a money-pit, typically means you will be at least middle-class for the rest of your life.

But sssssshhhh don’t tell everyone !! Otherwise there will be more buyers and more competition.

> I don't see much difference with a tech worker being coerced to spent 8+ hours a day building repulsive advertising and surveillance technologies to put a roof over their head.

Really? When was the last time your boss's customers put their dicks inside of you and filled your body with semen? Your cushy tech job is a world away from prostitution.

webinvest · 2 years ago
That seems less exploitive of labor. At least you can pick your hours, clients, sex acts, and pay. With the former job, you don’t have a choice anymore.

I tend to agree here, but there's a reasonable viewpoint that people shouldn't be able to consent to some things if they're assumed to be unreasonable or socially harmful.

For instance, we disallow the selling of organs. I'm all for bodily autonomy, but this seems reasonable.

At the very extreme case, one might say "I give you permission to murder me, if you provide for my family".

While I agree that self-direction and autonomy are essential rights (pretty strongly, in fact), everyone puts limits on them. For some people, the dynamics of prostitution might be that limit. It's not the case for me, but reasonable people might draw the line there.

We disallow the selling of organs due to the potential of selling someone else’s organs.

At the end of the day all you need is one person and one bullet, right? See: JFK, Indira Gandhi, John Lennon, many more. 50,000 people all with a lot of bullets seems like a bit of a problem no matter what. Gandhi in particular is interesting, as she was murdered by two of her Sikh bodyguards angry over how she dealt with the Sikh independence movement at the time. Who knows who will get "inspired" from this action, and what they will do.

Learn from the past. Assassinating the dictator just creates a power vacuum that someone else fills. Look at Iraq. The US killed Osama Bin Laden. Then Al Qaeda. Now there’s ISUS and they control everything there. Figure out what will fill the power vacuum or you may do more harm than good.

What on earth.. is this captcha some kind of joke?

https://ibb.co/3yW9mjj

I'm a human but it's not clear what the "challenge" even is that needs to be completed.

And after you get it wrong, it doesn't kick you out, it just flashes a toast message like "User failed captcha".

Twilight zone material.

I just hit accept with a blank input and it accepted it

The loading time need to be improved & sped up to under 2 seconds. Ideally a quarter of a second. It’s doable — one thing to do is serve a cached page first.

At the time of writing, the 1st page load is 14 seconds and subsequent page loads are 7 seconds.
