walletdrainer commented on AT&T, Verizon blocking release of Salt Typhoon security assessment reports   reuters.com/business/medi... · Posted by u/redman25

If they simply implicated an "APT" in wrongdoing, they would have released it, as it would have been unremarkable and fit neatly within the Overton window of hissing-chinese spys justifying an even more expansive national security apparatus and general anti-sino sentiments among the ruling class in Washington.

This leads me to two possible, non-exclusive outcomes: the links to China are tenuous, and the attribution is flimsy (e.g., they accessed a machine at 9 am Beijing time!); or the report implicates the system itself as unauditable by design, which was bound to happen given the design of the intercept tools.

These reports would be useful for any other attacker interested in their infra, it’s obvious why the companies wouldn’t want to release them in this manner.

> So it's cool if one person gets deplatformed, as long as it's not a pattern? Odd choice if you ask me.

No, it's not cool even if it's just one person. The point is that you should absolutely be upset at the bank for arbitrarily banning someone for no reason, but not at Peter Thiel or Palantir, since it being just one non-high-profile critic means there's no good reason to think they had anything to do with it.

Why? It’s the regulators who are to blame for that, not the bank.

"Not believing in coincidences" is a standard canned quip, a meme of sorts, for just about any internet conspiracy nut, used selectively to defend their baseless theories but not actually a principle they apply literally to everything (unless they have profound schizophrenia I guess.)
walletdrainer · 5 days ago
I know, but it’s useful to point this out. “I’m batshit crazy” is hardly a sound basis for an argument.

Zero indication that these things are related in any way.

The streamer is a self-admitted basket case who does not “believe in coincidences”. As far as weird internet belief systems go, this one seems even a bit weirder than people who refuse to believe in a somewhat spherical earth.

this is for api only

Is it even possible to actually use codex any other way? Every time I’ve tried logging in instead of using the API, I’ve hit the usage limits within a couple of hours.

Someone being beaten up on the streets is domestic policing issue.

That the perpetrators may turn out to be foreign agents is neither here nor there, only if they were diplomatic staff would it not be a domestic policing issue. However the UK police have largely withdrawn from certain areas, and this would simply be another symptom.

High Court action suggests there was a civil case pursuing the perpetrators (or their principals), rather than a criminal case. With a properly functioning police system, that should not be necessary.

Kahn is the PCC for London, he sets their priorities.

walletdrainer · 9 days ago
Doesn’t matter if it’s people being poisoned with polonium or getting beaten up, preventing the activities of foreign intelligence services is generally not the job of the PCC.

It is the job of the British intelligence services to blow someone up in Riyadh to deter these activities.

They probably would if they would see your username here!

I think they should have requested KYC when I was complaining about being unable to log into gmail, but I’m not going to complain as long as the service works.

I don’t use Luminati for anything illegal though, so it’s possible they just have some super amazing abuse detection algorithms that know this.

It is London - hardly surprising.

Nothing will improve as long as Khan is Mayor, and may not even if he is replaced.

Anyway, MI6 (SIS) is the overseas spies, MI5 is the domestic spy agency.

walletdrainer · 9 days ago
Yes, it totally makes sense to blame Khan for what foreign intelligence services are doing in London. This is completely reasonable.

How feasible would it be for the host under measurement to introduce additional artificial latency to ping responses, varying based on source IP, in order to spoof its measured location?
walletdrainer · 9 days ago
Totally feasible.

You could do even cooler tricks, like https://github.com/blechschmidt/fakeroute

Pointless? Almost certainly.

They do KYC when you want to unblock certain domains.
walletdrainer · 10 days ago
Also not my experience, even though I’ve had to email them for whitelisting.

It might just be because my account is very old?
