The idea of Framework laptops sounds great! But I’m wondering: has anyone done an economic analysis comparing buying a Framework laptop a few years ago and gradually upgrading it, versus buying a similar popular brand laptop and just upgrading by getting a new model? I’m not trolling, I’m genuinely considering Framework as my next laptop.

I was living in Kyiv at the time of the accident, and later I worked for the Ministry of Chernobyl (a special government ministry created to deal with the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster). I assisted groups of international researchers in analysing data on the consequences of the accident, including radioactive contamination distribution through food chains.

This article is complete rubbish. Everything was tightly measured and controlled. The radiation levels required to trigger memory bits (ferrite memory!) in a building next to the train station, through the walls and metal panels enclosing computer blocks and at such a distance, would probably make a cow glow in the dark :) Geiger counters weren’t restricted - they just weren’t sold to the general public. But somehow, after Chernobyl, every one of my friends managed to procure one (I had three). Even the final part about "filling in immigration papers with any country" is implausible. It wasn’t possible to simply emigrate from the Soviet Union to any country. There was a limited Jewish emigration path, but it was far from easy.

I wrote a blog post today which according to stats was read by 1 person so far. I consider this a positive outcome. Seriously.

The problem with successful tech figures is that, over time, they often become convinced they can succeed at anything. Musk is a glaring recent example - and now Paul. I do appreciate his essays on tech and related subjects, but not for their literary merit. If I’m seeking advice on writing, I’d turn to actual writers - people who’ve earned recognition and acclaim specifically for their work in that field.

It’s a lovely speech. I’m older now and can appreciate it. However, I’m not sure if I would have in my twenties. Unfortunately, some things can't be advised or taught - you have to discover them for yourself through trial and error.

"it turns out messages from 5 digit shortcodes often aren't supported over wifi calling."

This does not seems plausible. I live in urban area but do not have good cellural connection at home and my mobile phones are usually route calls via home Wifi. All SMS come through. It is just a low-lever transport and I doubt it cares about message size or numbers.

I knew someone who had email ??@ua (two letters masked for priivay) which might have been one of the shortest email addresses in the world. Unfortunately it was not very useful as most email systems failed to recognize it as a valid email address. :(

They should take a look at OPAM (OCaml’s package manager). There was a really impressive talk at the OCaml Workshop at POPL or ICFP a couple of years ago about how it works. Basically, they have a huge CI infrastructure and keep all versions of every package ever published. So, once you’ve found the right set of dependencies for your project, you can be sure the exact versions will always be available via OPAM.
