Unfortunately they went along with it initially but at least they came to their senses in the end: https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdguardFilters/issues/216586

This is why it’s better to use AdGuard only for its DNS blocking capability and not for DNS resolving - use a real resolver like unbound https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unbound_(DNS_server)

That sounds very intriguing, do you mind sharing the smart pen model?
vin047 · 9 months ago
Not the GP, but I got a Rocketbook from my most recent workplace when I joined. Not quite a smart pen, more like smart paper - each page is grid paper with a QR code at the bottom that you scan with their app to digitise.

I wonder why Flutter didn't gain traction in US. It seems to be more or less popular in poor countries and even less in Europe. But in US it seems to be quite a no name. Why US is so JavaScript-centric?
vin047 · 9 months ago
There are a lot more JS and Native developers compared to Flutter/Dart developers in the West. Plus fear-mongering around Google dropping development of Flutter.

As a newer user of Flutter I found Riverpod to be extremely heavy and have a lot more mental overhead than using stateless widgets with Hooks.

Any particular reason you personally prefer Riverpod?

vin047 · 9 months ago
Riverpod does a lot more than just state management - it also handles dependency injection and reactive caching.

Here’s a great guide on using Riverpod: https://codewithandrea.com/articles/flutter-state-management...

This is not a suddenly emerging "gotcha".

This risk has always existed. It existed when they chose to open source it in the first place.

Time and time again we see the lesson being learned the hard way that "if your business value is your codebase, it's hard to build a business whilst literally giving it away".

vin047 · 9 months ago
This is exactly what the AGPL was made to combat against. But open source devs still choose more permissive licenses first - presumably to attract corporate clients to use their product (and because devs are suckers to large corporate interests)

Well, just yesterday I had to run FreeDOS from a USB in order to run a sas2flash utility that didn't run on Linux or directly via UEFI, so I could flash some firmware to a SAS controller. Seems at least some of us still need it :)

Btw, avoid getting a SAS controller if you can, and get a motherboard that directly supports as many SATA drives as you need. Few things have been as frustrating as dealing with this SAS controller thing.

vin047 · 10 months ago
Off-topic, but what SAS controllers are you having trouble with? Was going to get some for my NAS, would be good to get some insight on what to get and expect!

The reason I chose Synology over others was their SHR "filesystem", where you can continue adding heterogeneously sized disks after constructing the FS and it will make the most use possible out of the extra capacity in the new disks. When I researched it ZFS did not yet have the resizing feature merged, now it does, though I think it is still not able to use this extra space.

I'm wondering if anybody has any better recommendations given the requirement of being able to add storage capacity without having to completely recreate the FS.

- mergerfs: https://github.com/trapexit/mergerfs - snapraid

Not used either but these were 2 options that came up when I was researching few years ago.

I will just like to add I never said they're senior nor do I know their billing rate. They were just given to us as 'experienced hires' (no senior or junior in the job title). As a mid-level peon in the company myself I'm not really privvy to much more information than that.
vin047 · a year ago
What is the expected skill level of an “experienced hire” if not mid-senior? Especially from a consulting/contracting company.
