I have a 7950x desktop and an M3 max, they are very distant in performance for development, albeit I'll give credit to Apple for good single core performance that show in some contexts.

I have a decent rig I built (5900x, 7900xt) of course it blows my M1 MacBook out of the water.

You seem like a reasonable person that can admit there’s some nice things about Apple Silicon even though it doesn’t meet everyone’s needs.

You very clearly have no experience on powerful desktop machines. A 9950x will absolutely demolish an M3 or M4 Macbook Pro in any possible test, especially multicore testing. And I don't care how "performant" or "efficient" you think it is, those M series chips will be thermally throttled like anything else packaged into a laptop.

Oh, and the vastly superior dekstop rig will also come out cheaper, even with a quality monitor and keyboard.

That’s my bad for not clarifying I am talking solely about the laptop form factor here. It’s a given that laptops are not comparable in performance to desktops. In terms of laptop hardware, Apple Silicon performs quite well

Nice assumptions though.

It’s not just my opinion that Apple silicon is pretty performant and efficient for the form factor; you can look up the stats yourself if you cared to. Yet, it seems you may be one of those people that is hostile towards Apple for less well-founded reasons. It’s not a product for everyone, and that’s ok.

> it rarely if ever makes sense to buy anything but the top spec Macbook Pro available

God I wish my employers would stop buying me Macbook Pros and let me work on a proper Linux desktop. I'm sick of shitty thermally throttled slow-ass phone chips on serious work machines.

Curious perspective. Apple silicon is both performant and very power efficient. Of course there are applications where even a top spec MacBook would be unsuitable, but I imagine that would be a very small percentage of folks needing that kind of power.

Sadly, the choice is usually between Mac and Windows—not a Linux desktop. In that case, I’d much prefer a unix-like operating system like MacOS.

To be clear, I am not a “fanboy” and Apple continues to make plenty of missteps. Not all criticisms against Apple are well founded though.

>Using difference-in-differences designs exploiting these sharp consulting events, we find positive effects on labor productivity of 3.6% over five years, driven by modest employment reductions alongside stable or growing revenue. Average wages rise by 2.7% with no decline in labor’s share of value added, suggesting productivity gains do not come at workers’ expense through rent-shifting.

This is why whenever someone asks me what language they should learn first (if they want to be a professional and not just a hobbyist), I say C. Don't learn a high level language first.

Learning Java before C is like learning to ride a bicycle before you learn to walk. You will need to learn C eventually, but learning C once you already have a high level language under your belt will make the experience frustrating. Having to manage your own memory, build your own data structures, it can be fun, but it's less fun once your brain is already wired to expect these things to be done for you.

> You will have to learn C eventually

Quite a bold assertion. I learned C in university—and while I am sure it was beneficial to my development as a programmer—there have been exactly 0 times since then that I have needed to read or write C.

That’s just my anecdotal experience, but I’d reckon many people can have a very successful professional career while never having touched C.

Article don't even mention SteamDeck's amazing touchpads, which no one replicated yet. These small squares enable a lot of old-ish games and whole genres what don't work with gamepads well
vict7 · 3 months ago
As someone that owns the (now discontinued) original Steam Controller with the touchpads, I imagine the touchpads on the SteamDeck are much better? It’s probably common knowledge at this point that the Steam Controller appeared to be a kind of testing ground for some aspects of the Steam Deck.

I wonder what the most useless unit is. Maybe "that much cocaine - the weight equivalent of one containerful of cocaine -".

I used to be someone who would talk to strangers everywhere I went. As a teenager who frequently took a train between cities, I found it interesting to talk to non-teenagers and hear their stories. They always seemed delighted to be talking to a younger person, too. Then one day, an older person I was sitting next to groped me while I was talking to them. Then the same thing happened to me on a plane. I don't talk to strangers anymore. I find that giving off "don't talk to me" vibes is best for my personal safety.
vict7 · 4 years ago
I am deeply sorry to hear that happened to you. I completely agree that a possibly positive encounter with a stranger is not worth the potential of assault--verbal or otherwise. I sometimes feel limited by this, but it ultimately feels worth it to help avoid some monstrous people.
