The primary bottleneck is typically the motion planning system that must continuously solve complex optimization problems to ensure safe trajectories while avoiding collisions in dynamic environments.
vhartman · 4 months ago
These models typically predict actions directly, there is no motion planning going on here.

Location: looking to go back to Switzerland
  Remote: Yes
  Willing to relocate: No
Technologies: C++, Python, Everything in a typical robotics stack
  Résumé/CV: upon request
  Email: hi@vhartmann.com
Currently finishing my PhD in robotics on task and motion planning (with a heavy focus on (multi-agent) motion planning), expecting graduation towards the end of the year. I contributed to boost and OMPL, and I have experience in controls and estimation as well. Previously wrote real-time capable MPC-contollers, high-performance numerical integration methods, and developed novel path planning methods during my PhD.

Looking for robotics jobs (controls/navigation), or interesting general software engineering.

The path simplification technique in the post is called "shortcutting" in robotics. Here [1] is some approachable explanation, the original paper [2] is relatively digestible read as well, and has some other techniques in there (amongs thm, partial shortcutting, which I found extremely helpful in robotics path planning).

Regarding general multi agent path finding: There is a lot of literature around with respect to time optimal planning in MAPF both in robotics, and in adjacent fields.

Zurich and London top out at $100k, any more and we're talking managerial responsibilities. Compared to SF or SEA they are only paying ~25% market rate.

The safety net argument has no legs. Australia and Canada both have social benefits that far exceed the majority of EU nations, yet pre-pandemic there was no shortage of $150k+ dev roles.

vhartman · 5 years ago
Zurich does definitely not top out at 100k. Depending on your negotiation skills, you'll start at about 120-140k in the big tech companies, around 120k in data science consulting, 120k for data science in banks, 80-100k at the smaller software companies.

Many PhDs in America expect you to be self-supporting, so you have to take up a loan. I believe the practice is explicitly forbidden in most European countries, so you have to earn funding before starting your research (I could be wrong on this, especially regarding the social sciences). PhDs in America also last way longer, 6+ years vs. 5 years max, generally 3 or 4 in most of Europe.

Also, and this is veering into anecdotal stuff, PhD students in Europe tend to be fresh out of university, in their early to mid twenties, and their life is still a bit of a mess in many aspects, much of it due to their being in the middle of a PhD with a close and looming deadline. Their American counterparts tend to be more stable and 'adult', have a spouse and kids, maybe partly due to the fact that they start later and take longer.

There are other aspects such as many American labs being much larger so the PI can become some sort of distant god-like figure that you hardly ever meet. Of course all of it is a huge generalization from my lived experience and that of people I know, so other people should feel free to chime in and correct what I've said.

Some things don't change though - everyone is underpaid.

vhartman · 5 years ago
I am currently doing a PhD in Europe. The duration of 3 or 4 years is only really true for hard sciences/engineering, and can be much longer in other fields.

The self-support part is not true for the UK at least - I got admitted to the program but did not get funding, so I could have taken a loan. In Germany, I am employed as a 'research assistant' during my PhD, and while underpaid compared to FAANG (or other tech firms), my salary is around the median wage.

Hey! I saw that you are not currently taking summer interns. Do you do off cycle internships by any chance?

This article is interesting but it's also completely unreadable in Firefox and Edge because they inexplicably decided to render black text on top of relatively dark photos.

??? What is with modern newspaper site design these days? Every time they update their designs it gets harder to read them, even though they're trying to convince me to pay for it.

vhartman · 8 years ago
It's not only that. I was unable to read any text even after the facebook-popup since scrolling did only sometimes lead to scrolling, and arrows did not do anything either.

How was I supposed to view this website?

Minodes (https://www.minodes.com/) | Berlin, Germany (ONSITE) | full-time & interns | Visa | Software/Data/Systems Engineers

Minodes is a startup in the retail analytics space. Based in the heart of Berlin, we provide (offline) retailers innovative solutions to understand their business better, enhance their customers' in-store shopping experience, and bridge the gap between online and offline using machine learning approaches.

From a technology perspective, we have thousands of our sensors installed in our customers' retail stores around the world and a server infrastructure to manage these sensors and to process the terabytes of data that they are producing. Our tech stack consists of Python (and Golang) for data processing and analysis, and Cassandra and Postgres for data storage. We work, learn and develop while having lots of fun on the way. The usual perks (drinks, breakfast, nice office, ...) are included. We're also happy to help with visa and relocation where necessary.

We are looking for a wide range of people to join our team, including:

DWH/Database Engineer: https://stackoverflow.com/jobs/144746/dwh-database-engineer-...

Site Reliability Engineer: https://stackoverflow.com/jobs/144751/site-reliability-engin...

Hey, I applied ~2 weeks ago and did not hear anything back yet. Is that a "no", or does it just take longer?
