I've got a weird one from a bank.

I was driving from South Carolina to Virginia, I was completely broke, and had exactly $20 in cash, and only a couple dollars in my checking account. I did my math wrong, and didn't have enough money for enough gas to make it home. I was trying to draft behind semi trucks and drive slow to conserve fuel, but it wasn't enough.

I called my bank at the gas station with my needle on empty and asked what would happen if I overdrew my account by $50, and the guy on the phone asked me to explain the situation. Afterwards he said I was good to go.

I asked, what does that mean? He said there's now $50 in your account. You can use it to fill up your car on your debit card.

I filled up my car and made it home. When I checked my account later, expecting to see an overdraft fee, there was a deposit of $50 from some account I didn't recognize. The guy had just transferred me $50 from his own account. I never figured out who this was, so ~18 years later, I'll take this opportunity to say: thank you sir.

I don't know that this is THE nicest thing anyone has ever done, but it was a small thing that made a huge difference in that moment.

Deliberately provocative use of the term 'disabled' in the headline. When you drill down into what is really going on, it is far more understandable.

I work on Bun.

Happy to answer any questions

Hi Jarred. Congratulations on the acquisition! Did (or will) your investors make any profit on what they put into Bun?

> BirdyChat and Haiket are the first two messaging apps that will initially be interoperable with WhatsApp.

What the heck are BirdyChat and Haiket? Both of those don't seem to actually exist, they just have a waitlist on their homepage.

Literally the only post on BirdyChat's blog is how they're now WhatsApp-compatible, but their initial Google Play release happened 45 days ago (Oct 16th).

Haiket's website similarly contains only one press release, which is to say that they're accepting waitlists since Nov 11th, but they're somehow funded by the "former CEO of AT&T Communications and board member of Palo Alto Networks and Lockheed Martin".

The thought of a runaway thermal reaction in a cell that’s sitting in your ear, albeit a small one, is pretty sobering.

I remember when A and B were commonly used drive letters. C was a luxury. D was outright bourgeois.

But for some reason, drive letters starting with C feel completely natural, too. Maybe it's because C is also the first note in the most widely known musical scale. We can totally afford to waste two drive letters at the start, right?

Oh bless you and your youngsterness. A and B, by convention, were reserved for floppy drives and C was typically the first hard drive.

Interesting how many people in a hacker forum seem to be so pro-establishment and instead try to denigrate the goals of this initiative because of the chosen character. I guess that's how many earn their dollar after all?

Sure, if it had been today, Clippy would have been evil but that's the point, it wasn't back then. Why are we so accepting of the change?

urbandw311er · 17 days ago
If anything I’m appalled precisely because I _do_ support the goals of the initiative! So I think you’ve got your thinking a little mixed up there.

What a terrible choice of character to represent the goals of this movement! I do wonder if the person who chose it was actually alive at the time of Clippy and fully understands how hated it really was. The idea anyone would want to “be like clippy” is utterly laughable to many of my generation.

When it comes to the evals for this kind of thing, is there a standard set of test data out there that one can work with to benchmark against? ie a collection of documents with questions that should result in particular documents or chunks being cited as the most relevant match.
