Are they consistent? As a North American, I find it difficult to take EU/European countries’ stances on addiction seriously when they seem to be decades behind on reducing the prevalence of smoking and drinking, which almost certainly cause more practical harm than TikTok ever could.

what is more damaging, a hammer, a sword, or poison?

i hope i don’t have to go out of my way to explain the analogy.

People use social media to consume news and entertainment and to curate and communicate with people and accounts using an interface that allows them to read and share multiple media types.

My mother used it to communicate with her COPD support group and chat with in-laws in Australia. I use it to follow up on work groups and authors and developers I'm interested in. Most people's usage of social media is banal and mundane, little different than watching television in the 1990s. They use social media because it provides value for them, not because they're addicted to dopamine.

i think you have a very idealised view of social media. have you been to a classroom recently?

it’s also meaningfully different in structure from tv. tv was 7-10 min of content and a couple of ads in between. and you grew annoyed by the ads. only toddlers were captivated. now most content is designed like ads were. and now they grow annoyed when outside it. and toddlers and older people are captivated.

it really doesn't work, the cursor will often snap right back especially when you're using a search or URL bar
ulbu · 19 days ago
yea, url substring selection is shit.

No quite. On iOS, I cannot place the cursor in the middle of a word by putting my finger there. It goes to the beginning or end of the word, and then I have to drag it like an ice cube to the precise spot. On Android you can tap exactly where you want the cursor to go, and it does with perfect precision.

ah ok, yes, i see. did not notice the nuance in the parent.

Thanks for that tip!

Unfortunately, it's still bad. It's a bit better than dragging the handles of the selected area, but if I go to far and want to reduce the selected area, it doesn't work anymore.

ulbu · 20 days ago
yes, this feature seems to be extend-only.

Yet on Android you can simply tap exactly where you want the cursor to be placed. It's a much superior experience.
ulbu · 20 days ago
um, you do the same on ios.

How? I know you can move the cursor by holding space and dragging but how do you start the selection?
ulbu · 20 days ago
touch the keyboard area with another finger :)

And they had it solved! 3D Touch worked perfectly – you pushed the screen hard to get a cursor, moved it to the start of the selection, and pushed hard again to drag to the end. They killed it because "not all iPhones had the hardware to support it" or something.

you can still make selections using the keyboard without 3d touch.
