> We don't (net) sell it

We export a metric fuck tonne of it; half as much as Saudi Arabia [1].

> we don't sell very much the world wants

We’re the world’s second-largest exporter [2].

Geez.

US oil is fracked, which means that to get out of the microscopic fissures in the rocks only the lighter stuff comes out.

This makes excellent gasoline. By the way, this is also why we've become a CH4 power house.

Unfortunately, the US runs on diesel. We don't produce much heavy oil so we import it.

net it basically cancels out depending on interest rates, price of oil and who's in charge in DC.

Fracking, anyway, is an economic mirage enabled by cheap credit and expensive oil. Fracking sucks because the wells don't produce much.

We are the world’s largest oil producer [1].

We don't (net) sell it. In fact we don't sell very much the world wants

A key thing is that the US is now the biggest oil producer, so the exact agreement is less important since the US uses more of its own oil, with the money never having left the US in the first place
thsksbd · a year ago
The petrodollar was never about access to Saudi oil. Even when we imported large amounts of oil, we also produced a lot and we had very many different suppliers.

The petrodollar was about creating a massive market for USD despite us having a massive trade deficit. Every country that wanted to buy oil had to hold USD and US treasuries to buy the oil.

This cemented the USD as the world currency therefore financing our budgetary (as opposed to trade) deficit with cheap interest rates.

Over 100 successful ejections per year? That's wild! That sounds like an awful lot of hull losses. And how many people weren't saved?

What's the risk calculus look like for a plane with an ejection seat vs. a plane without one? War obviously has one risk profile, but military vehicles and their operation differ wildly from day to day commercial operation.

That includes the Vietnam and Korean wars - lots of pilots got shot down

Uh, yes? There are dozens of specific US laws that govern this and tons of existing case law that committing a serious crime overseas is punishable in the US regardless of its legality elsewhere.

The Travel Act for example makes it illegal to fly to another country to engage in sexual acts with a minor, even if it is legal in that country. Do you think that is some sort of government overreach?

thsksbd · a year ago
Yes because it is a breach to the principle of jurisdiction and it's ultimately based on American imperialism.

Mind you, Id gladly have pedos and banana execs shot in public.

So the entire misinformation spiral basically traces back to the New York Post? Damn.

I'm always shocked that anyone ever takes the Post seriously, but they're in a double whammy situation where (1) 90% of their content is sensationalist garbage and (2) most people seem unaware of this prior point. Which means they can spin up whatever shit and it'll get a lot of traction, way more than most other tabloids.

thsksbd · a year ago
Except when things matter, like an election.

Then, the NyPost is the only media outlet to run a story of a laptop (recently verified by the FBI in court) containing incriminating evidence of corruption of one of the two leading candidates.

O dunno if it's the greatest, but it's good enough that thanks to it Linux became my desktop.

Maybe there's a better distribution? But who has time to explore?

Thanks Debian team!

A friend mentioned RPL, but that didn’t seem to even have first-class functions… unless I’m mistaken?
thsksbd · a year ago
Im not a CS guy, so I dont know what "first class" means.

I can do whatever to a function. I can use it as an argument. I can return it from another function. I can make a function that modifies functions.

All that w/out doing anything out of the ordinary day to day programing.
