Taking a look. For the past two years I've been thinking about drawing. Why it's difficult, how its possible for people like Kim Jung Gi to draw from their imagination. My theory is that it's a learned thing (as opposed to innate ability), but that it's not taught from primitives well. For example, rotating a cube is something that you cannot really find an explanation for. I think the actual difficulty in drawing (representational-ly) boils down to preserving the identity of objects through rotation. This difficulty is preserved in the presence of perspective or not (orthographic projection).

Forget it. There's very little that can be taught about drawing.

Drawing from model is about being the kind of character that enjoys spending hours tweaking at tiny details and measuring measuring measuring. Anybody willing to sit 3 hours in front of the model every day can learn it, if he understands that he must measure.

Drawing from imagination like Kim Jung Gi on the other hand is about doing that every day most of the day since you were a little kid, and you probably need an innate ability to boot (and that might be some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder / autism...).

Been eyeing this project for a while, hesitant to pull the trigger before a 1.0, just because email is a pain to configure, and having to keep up with changes before a 1.0 would have been a pain.

I'd love to see a blog or some post on the roadmap for this project (and the org in general).

you are in luck then, they just cut 1.0 4 hours ago =)

This argument from the article meshes with my own thinking:

The reason there have not been new forms of life originating on Earth, evolving alongside our microbial cousins, could be that there is simply no room for a newcomer. In a system where every niche is filled with more advanced life looking for a next meal, even if a new form of life got started, it would not last long.

There are a number of related issues regarding life, including LUCA and the emergence of mitochondria in eukaryotic cells, which suggest to me less that a single ancestor existed at that time than that that ancestor's descendents out-competed (or out-lucked) all other comers, and that once established other contenders for life simply couldn't find an available niche.

Oh, and bad news for the fans of LGM / panspermia, at least in the "absence of evidence" sense:

Population statistics indicate that the microorganisms originated from terrestrial contamination during the sample preparation stage rather than being indigenous to the asteroid.

A property with apple trees (and space to grow more) is seriously enviable. Hands in earth is one of my favorite therapies. I've been contemplating a move for a few years and this additional inspiration may just be the tipping point.

the problem with trees is that it takes several years before the first fruit, and the slightest problem with weather will easily kill off all the season's batch... otherwise even more than tempting than an orchard would be an "edible forest"/"forest garden"

I wish you could see your comment as most people see it.

When you refer to "males" and "females", and especially use terms like "low-quality female" you sound absolutely unhinged.

or realistic maybe? people are too keen to forget that we share 98.8% DNA with chimps...

> young men having porn addition and having no ambition to interact with real women

this made me lol so much. porn addition is not the cause, but the consequence.

do you have any idea how hard it is for males to find a willing mate nowadays? most females have men fighting over them, while most men must always do the fighting to get even one low-quality female in their entire life.

I visited a remote island in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific.

A tiny island, I walked all around the island in the water in about two hours.

There were hundreds, probably thousands of plastic drink bottles in the water and on the sand.

Every step brought fresh plastic drink bottles into view.

Humans don't deserve this planet.

throwthrow4567 · 9 months ago
good sentiment, but how did you reach that remote island? most likely, that 2 hour walk produced quiet a hefty amount of disproportionate pollution.
