"The problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have no taste and I don't mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way" - Steve Jobs

There's something utterly amusing about posting Steve Jobs quotes under M$ critique and vice versa.

I often see this comment, and every time I think; but having people come to the information AND the community is better for the project.
throwmeback · 2 years ago
by community do you mean all the people who make an account just to ask a question on the project's discord, only ever open it to check if someone answered and then never use discord again?

  > You also get that intangible "separation" of your work life from your home life that your commute used to give you--hard to explain. A brief walk outside to and from the office allows me to reset into work-mode or home-mode.
A lifehack that I learned here on HN when I was working from home was to actually leave the door, then walk right back in and work. If I needed to do any housework, I would again leave through the door, and return "home".

This reduced all temptations to mix work and home life. It also made it clear to the other people in the house that daddy is now serious, and that even just a simple "hi, how are you" would require me to get up, leave, and return to answer. And then leave and return to go back to work. The social friction was important.

Somehow as I was reading this post, a mugshot of Ted Kaczynski appeared in the background.

Downvoting this is not enough. I'd pay $5 (reddit style) to have this properly killfiled if HN allowed for that. Besides, not "everybody hates them, only those inmature enough to still need intellectual babysitting.

So what you're really complaining about is that other people will not follow your choices. If your relations have such a hard line that a single app is "the only way to interact with certain groups of people", they are the ones to blame, not the maker of the app.

I'm afraid life (at least mine) is way more complicated than that.

Actually this might rather be coming from an autism spectrum. This work mate, a very fine programmer I must say, starts any point he might have with a few minutes long background presentation. I can't say that I get much value from that intro, but that's his way so I say let him have it. And we're never under that time pressure to need to interrupt him anyway.

I love the service, I hate the name. It's got too much cute/whimsy for my taste, and it just makes me feel like the "hello fellow teenagers" guy. If they had the same everything but it was a "short and easy to spell/pronounce" domain service, I would 100% go for it.

It doesn't have to be entirely boring, but less... cute. Also I think that meme language has a high risk of drifting into the cringe zone, and then that will feel bad too. I would have the same problem with lit.lol or yeet.lol.

Am I alone in being willing to pay more for less whimsy? Give me the $30/year plan where I can pick bucket.web or tiny.star or something less of the moment.
