In a sense, society sold out
throwaway173738 · a day ago
Everyone’s got to eat, and it started getting a lot harder after 2000 and especially after 2008. Gen X could afford integrity.

I’m reminded of the scenes in My Fair Lady where Eliza’s father comes in to money, and he’s lamenting that he can afford “middle-class morality.”

About half of those profits were from the Optum side of the business, not from insurance.
throwaway173738 · 4 days ago
If you’ve had UHC you’d know very well that Optum is intimately tied to their insurance business. UHC just “administers the plan” while Optum controls plan decisions. So when there’s a problem, which there always is with every claim more complicated than a PCP visit, you get bounced between both companies for hours until you find someone willing to take responsibility for answering questions.

It's amazing. The American president is quite literally creating a parallel military force to jail and kill people on the streets, they're arresting opposing journalists, politicians, pressuring tv channels and news organizations to fire people, invading countries without congressional approval, threatening allies with annexation for no fucking reason, dismantling any social programs left, and all of that led by a proven pedophile billionaire that was the customer and friend of a huge human trafficker, as were most of his billionaire friends who he favors with absolutely no shame.

And this is just the latest news coming from over there. I won't mention the fact that there are people alive today who couldn't drink from the same fountain as other people because their skin is dark. It was never fucking great.

So if you are American and still talk all this shit about China being a dictatorship and authoritarian this and “purge” that, I wish you would honestly shut the fuck up. Really. You are in no position to have an informed opinion on this because all of your information is force fed down your throat by half a dozen mega companies that are in bed with your regime.

So yeah, I'm sure China has a lot of issues, but if you didn't live there for some time or even speak the language for that matter, just shut the fuck the up.

No. I didn’t vote for that, and I’m not going to meekly give up on talking shit about the US and other countries. This idea that you have to be perfect to comment on anything imperfect needs to die.

Honestly the 3M 60923 cartridges don't restrict breathing at all. They have great airflow. I've used them all day long in chemical plants, no one complains about that.
throwaway173738 · 6 days ago
Thirding this. I can wear one all day in hot weather with a half mask on climbing ladders. I did this to paint my house during fire season one year.

> 3M does not provide product information on which filters are best for government repression

Just get the one that everyone else does: NIOSH TC-84A-0510 with protection against "Solid Particles, Organic Vapors, Acid Gases, Ammonia, Formaldehyde, Methylamine". Every lab buys this filter, or its manufacturer equivalent, for dealing with god-knows-what, because this one will handle just about anything.

throwaway173738 · 6 days ago
I would definitely do a full-face mask. You can buy them at Lowes for painting. The half masks do nothing to protect your eyes. Also try to get Pxx filters as they withstand oils. Some chemicals are oil-soluble and normal Nxx cartridges can’t handle more than one exposure.

"The only thing that helps against horrible neighbors is moving. If you've never learned that lesson, you've never had horrible neighbors."

Having lived next to a terrible neighbour for over 20 years, I can confirm a horrible neighbour never changes into a considerate one. And often they're the ones that never sell or move (why would they, they're having a great time..). Almost all the neighbours properties around here have been sold a few times, but not him.

Lucky we've been lucky with our other neighbours who are (currently, and most of the owners of the past too) all very nice people.

We'd love to move, but we really like the location, house and garden. That and anything similar is priced out of our range.

We used to think we got really lucky with the price of our place, but maybe no one bought it because they knew the neighbour that lived there.

But yeah, if you can move, move. Don't hang around hoping things will get better, they usually don't.

I stood my ground once against an awful neighbor. The neighborhood was a fishbowl and he already had a bad reputation that he wanted to pretend didn’t exist. My spouse and I put up a fence on the property line and nowhere else, which really embarrassed him. And at one point we figured out he was eavesdropping on us. I found out he had a record and so I started talking with my spouse in the room he eavesdropped on about getting a restraining order and about his record. It took about 3 months but he eventually packed up and left.

Why did they not validate their connection with the base station? Couldn’t you send your radio front end to your base stations and have them communicate in a shielded environment? I know that’s how consumer wireless is tested. Had they done that they could’ve addressed the incompatibility on the ground.

The US has a soy glut and a corn glut, and Germany has a potato glut. What to do with all those carbs? Feed cattle?

Soy is a pretty good protein.

No, no, no. You can change your doctor, and get one that listens to you - you can't change the fact that ChatGPT has no skin in the game - no reputation, no hippocratic oath, no fiscal/legal responsibility. Some people have had miracles with Facebook groups, or WebMD, but that doesn't change where the role of a doctor is or mean that you should be using those things for medical advice as opposed to something that allows you to have an informed conversation with a doctor.
throwaway173738 · 9 days ago
Indeed you might have to for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with your quality of care. I’ve had to do so a few times now.

I’ve had good results with doctors for soft tissue injuries, but it doesn’t feel like something that GPs are generally equipped/motivated for. The good results I’ve had have been from doctors at high performance sports clinics, or with doctors I’ve been referred to by my (awesome) sports physiotherapist.
throwaway173738 · 9 days ago
Yeah my dad would always go to sports medicine docs specifically because GPs are basically going to tell you to stop whatever hurts but sports medics will tell you how to do it without pain.
