No clue who the best registrar is these days, but I've had nothing but good experiences with Google Domains.

All others I've tried have had unintuitive interfaces that make me want to scrape my eyeballs out.

GoDaddy the worst among them.

I would never dare using Google for something as critical as a domain name. Even if they're legit, the minute you have a problem you can be sure you'll never have an answer other than "We identified an issue on your side. Case closed, don't use our services again."

This happened to me on Hover. The fishy part is if you say you won’t pay it and bargain it magically goes down to 50-90 usd. That makes me think they have control over the price and take a hit just to secure the lower amount.

I would not trust any of the registrars, not even Hover.

Redemption fees are set by the registry, not the registrar. Of course the registrars apply their standard markup but I don't know of a registrar that will add an unreasonable markup to the already prohibitive restore prices.

> That makes me think they have control over the price

Well yeah, registrar is a business, of course you have some say on the price you sell your domains... But there's a base price that is set by the registry behind the registrars

As an example, the .com is sold by Verisign (the registry) around 9 USD for the create/renew, but around 50 USD for the restore, depending on the negotiated price between the registrar and Verisign. So basically no registrar will allow you to restore a domain in redemption period for less than 50 USD.

In my team we used Gin and migrated to Echo (because Gin didn't support conflicting routes at the time, like /foo/{variable} and /foo/bar) and we got to the same conclusion. Forgetting to return with Gin (and with net/http) is an issue that actually occurs, and we've been bitten by it more times than we care to admit.

Of course it's not worth migrating to Echo just for that but it's good to know that some routers implement it differently, if it's something that bothers you.

We saw a post the other day about using DALL-E and GPT-3 in conjunction with one another. I think more of these systems working together is going to revolutionize basically everything, especially when democratized with cheaper consumer hardware.

Did DALL-E and GPT-3 revolutionize anything yet? (I know it might sound snarky but it's not my intention, I genuinely wonder how they're used today, other than demos)

The stumble over abandonment of ICE vehicles.

By 2030 (8 years from now) at least six manufacturers will have stopped making ICE vehicles entirely, and India claims it will ban the sale of ICE-only vehicles. By 2040 (18 years from now) over half of all new cars sold will be electric, and the UK and France claim they will ban the sale of ICE-only vehicles.

However, there's still not a plan that makes all that sustainable, as we need 30% more grid capacity, an insanely higher number of chargers (1 out of 4 are duds) / service companies / land, China still controls most of the resources for production (of raw resources, manufacturing, & assembly) and now they want the chips too. And the climate picture isn't great either, with not enough new clean energy capacity going online, and only 8 million barrels of crude will be displaced by the estimated number of new EVs. Even with all of this new work, there will be only a small reduction in carbon emissions.

Basically there are so many things that can go wrong in the next 18 years, and so many things we don't even have a plan for, that all the estimates we've been given will result in dysfunction, increased prices, and soaring secondary markets. A lot of people are going to make money just from preparing for things to go wrong.

I usually get the result I want in the second slot. The first slot is always wrong because it's always an ad.

Ads should never be above perfect matches, this is misleading.

If it's in the contract you sign, then it's already priced in. I don't see much value in specifically outlining which part is base and which is for oncall, if oncall is mandatory.
throwaddzuzxd · 4 years ago
French here.

My contract says that if on-calls are needed, I might have to be in the rotation. This clause increases my pay rate even if I'm not on-call.

If however I am actually on-call, I am paid more. And if the on-call rings, I'm again paid more on top of the on-call period. And as the French law mandates 11 consecutive hours of rest, if the on-call rings in the middle of the night, I'll usually come to work later the day after.

If you don't have advantages for being on-call, you're the one being taken advantage of.
