Also leetcode does not really provide insight into ones ability to design business solutions. Whether it be system design, just some small feature implementation or communication skills within a team. Its just optimizers jerking each other off on some cryptic problems 99.999999999% of developers will never see in real life. Maybe it would've been useful like 30 years ago, but all commonly used languages have all these fancy algorithms baked into their stdlib, why would I ever have to implement them myself?

Or more likely, the commonality is how you're applying your software skills?

In every other field it's helpful to understand the basics. I don't think software is the exception here.

So, what did you learn from that project??

thorncorona · 23 days ago
I previously hand baked everything.

I learned how andible, terraform, and docker approach dev ops and infra.

I would not be able to hand cook anything with these tools but understanding the syntax was a non goal (nor what interests me).

What would the average software engineer pay for a AI coding subscription, as compared to not having any at all? Running a survey on that question would give some interesting results.

I pay $20/m for cursor. It allowed me to revamp my home lab in a weekend.

Fusion is the answer to "how can we extract R&D money for decades without ever actually delivering anything." There is little prospect it's going to be competitive, particularly DT fusion. The engineering/economic obstacles are profound even if all the plasma physics problems are solved. Most of the efforts being touted are obvious nonstarters.

That is what they say about self driving cars, and there are services which are commercially available right now.

> It takes extraordinary skill to successfully juggle multiple ventures.

That's a myth. I've done that, and I know a lot of people who do that. Do you think Musk is writing sparse attention code for Grok? Does he even know how Grok's architecture works under the hood? Or that he designed the data centers? I mean, you delegate stuff. The only hard thing is getting the right people, but if you're a hyped up billionaire, it's easy mode because you can pay a lot, and people want to work for you. You just create an environment where they can achieve things.

There are times when the majority of your work is simply attending public meetings, podcasts, and doing interviews. People really overestimate what's involved in the work of a billionaire CEO. The people actually making things happen in space industry or AI work harder, longer, and solve more complex problems than any CEO and in some cases they need to work hard against the CEOs to actually make things happen.

If true this is the deal of the century. Apple pay 1/14th of a Wang per year for a top tier model whereas Meta burn multiple Wangs a year in salary alone and get garbage.

When is this not true?

It is cheaper to buy GPUs than to develop the capabilities to develop GPUs.

I'm just confused why people think token-based computing is going to be in such demand in the future. It's such a tiny slice of problems worth solving.

It's like how every big co these days is ML. It will transition to LLMs as well.

Just give it a few years.

I have a similar dilemma with my car. I drive a 25-year old Lexus with a bizarre electrical glitch. The ABS sometimes goes off as you come to a stop, for no reason at all. It only ever happens below ~10mph, and only when decelerating gradually. Never happens under heavy braking. It's not a safety hazard, and honestly you get used to it. Yet, anyone who test drives this car will run for the hills because it feels spooky.

It's still a terrific car. Comfortable, well made, fast enough for all practical situations. Unusally low mileage for its age. An engine that's sought after in the tuner community. But, it's unsellable. I'm stuck with it, whether I like it or not.

The good news is that I like it. The funny news is that I took a new job that will move me to the Bay, and whatever my new employer is paying to move my car out there is definitely more than my car is worth.
