I've already jumped ship. Switching source control host was actually pretty easy. Builds still working just fine.

Great! Who did you jump to ?

Could someone from Norway provide a comment on this? How credible is e24.no?
thomasnno · 9 years ago
Norwegian here. I belive that e24.no is highly credible, I have been reading it for a number of years. The news of the harsh penalties for these uber drivers have also been mentioned in the radio news.

I totally get what you are saying but it seems to be to be increasingly difficult to find the good frameworks, especially since the badness of some frameworks only manifest on larger scales.

I do hope that the notion that technical debt does not neccessarily mean the previous developer was a moron/lazy/bad person takes hold. We developers need to respect each other more. There MAY have been a good reason for doing it the old way.

This is always worrying to see when set as an expectation. I mean, I enjoy coding. My employer gets my 40-ish hours of attention. But I just can't seem to get into after-hours or weekend coding side projects.

I have ideas to explore (Nothing I'd ever want to turn into a business, perish the thought), but I just... can't find the motivation to spend more hours doing what I already spend about a third of my life doing. I enjoy reading articles and the like, sure, but if I wanted to work on side projects, I'd need to take extended time away from work to "reset" and get into something.

Does this make me destined to fall behind? I'm hoping not, but given how many people talk about needing one's job to be their all-consuming passion, to be something they spend spare time and weekends on... I'm not always hopeful.

I honestly believe that as long as you are always trying to improve and don't coast, you should be good. I do not do side projects after work, but do try to work on my coding skills, focus and discipline during the workday. 17 years and counting, and every single year I improve (some times only by a little bit, but it really adds up).

Why specifically Russia and not Norway, Saudi Arabia or ... the US ?

Norwegian here. The entirety of the earnings from the oil industry is funneled into our Sovereign Wealth Fund, and has been for decades. A few percent (4% ?) of this fund is spent each year by the state. So we are not as hard hit as the others, and the state can basically keep spening money at our present level for many years. Note that oil companies in Norway is scaling back, so our jobless rate and tax income is being hurt, but so far things are only getting interesting for those laid off and those directly in the oil business.

Ok, help me out here: Dogecoin's first block was mined on 2013-12-06 and now the richest account has $846,935 USD. Is it really that easy?

Could I start an aarondfcoin? Is it all about getting the network effect to make a non-backed (fiat) currency actually worth something?

I was just so shocked to see that Dogecoin was actually worth anything.

thomasnno · 12 years ago
The currency (and the meme it is "based on") is somewhat attractive, its silly image made me laugh, and mine for a few days, getting 120 000 or so Doge. If enough people think it funny enough to use, and of low enough value to actually use instead of just hold, it may have a future as a low value tipping currency. Your aarondfcoin lacks that funny easygoing silly meme power, I belive.

People keep asking me "What is the best way to convert my bitcoins to cash?"... anyone know a good answer that you know works (first hand)?
thomasnno · 12 years ago
I have successfully used localbitcoins.com, using National Bank Transfer. Use their escrow service. Note that you probably do not want to sell to people through paypal (they can easily reverse the transaction), nor to people though other easily reversible payment services.

where do you personally buy/sell BTC ?
thomasnno · 12 years ago
I have used localbitcoins.com a few times to buy bitcoins, and have been happy. Remember to use the site's escrow though.
