I know I am an old angry guy but I really don't want things to 'feel' (not sure what that even is) more modern; I have projects that bring me millions a year which are running for over 2 decades now and this kind of 'modern' is just obsolete next year. I like profit and not being bothered by updates every 5 seconds. I have a simple stack, my saas apps are violently fast and they run for decades without me touching anything but some bugs/features. The modern feel is not required and in fact detrimental to just making bucketloads of business value and company wealth imho. But then again, we never had investors, so I don't know how it feels to burn other people's money.

Curious about your stack that you are using if you don’t mind sharing.

Just had a great conversation with multiple people, really like the concept displayed in the showcase.

Can you elaborate on security issues here?
thestepafter · a year ago
I think that it means the reason for doing where 1 = 1 is sometimes to allow for easy insertion of dynamic queries which can be a security and performance issue. The actual usage of where 1 = 1 doesn't cause the security or performance issue.

The issue with diffing html is selectors are autogenerated with any update to a website's code. Often website which combat scraping will autogenerate different HTML. First thing is to screen caption a website for comparison. Second, it is possible to determine all the visible elements on a page. With Playwright, inject event listeners to all elements on a page and start automated clicking. If the agent fills out forms, then make sure that all fields are available to populate. There are a lot of heuristics.
thestepafter · a year ago
Are you doing screenshot comparison with Playwright? If so, how? Based on my research this looks to be a missing feature but I could be incorrect.

Nice write up, very targeted at websites with a focus on typography. A more aggressive reset still seems appropriate if you’re building more in web app territory.
thestepafter · a year ago
Any recommendations for a more aggressive reset? What if you are already using a library such as bootstrap or tailwind?

I personally don’t think DB migrations are that difficult, and I’d say they can be done a lot safer without an ORM. I’ve also never found an ORM that was easier to learn and overall easier to use than SQL. I’ve never understood how ORMs became so popular, I don’t get how somebody can look at how opaque and complicated they are and conclude that learning an ORM is easier than just learning SQL.
thestepafter · a year ago
100%. ORMs are good for basic queries but the messes I have seen written joining 20 plus tables with conditions and left joins, etc, oof. Just use SQL, it’s much cleaner and easier to maintain.

Disagree. Commander Keen 4-6 are better than Mario, imo.
thestepafter · a year ago
To add to this Commander Keen was released on a very limited platform. More people were gaming on Nintendo systems than personal computers. If Commander Keen was released on Nintendo things may have gone differently.

It just costs money to get electrical lines run to your toilet and then get it installed. Otherwise, I would do it.
thestepafter · a year ago
You don’t need electrical lines. Check out companies such as Tushy.

After living with a bidet, it’s really hard to go back. I don’t know why America doesn’t make it standard, especially new homes. You need to run an electrical line to the toilet though which most American bathrooms don’t have.
thestepafter · a year ago
There are plenty of bidets that don’t require electricity. You can buy them as attachments to almost any toilet.

This is neat!

A more generic solution to research-tabsplosion is https://browser.horse, where EVERY link clicked opens in a new tab, but your tabs are stored as a tree.

Oh, wow. You just changed my life. Thank you, this makes so much sense. Any other recommendations for different approaches to commonly used software?
