Lol.. other than the one side part (turtle anyone?) what you're proposing is a laserdisc. Ie an actual thing. They're not coming back either because they died. Vinyl never died it just declined. Simplicity of playback equipment is a big reason why. Also nothing stops anyone from putting a CD in a 12 inch jewel case or sleeve of some sort.

Laser disc never died either; just ask my 8th grade science teacher and his collection of documentaries. Still (!) evidence of use today.

I know of a startup that does group lunch every day. Even the remote people join (through Hangouts). I found it pleasant... It strengthens the team _and_ forces everyone to take their eyes away from a screen, slow down, and get out of the weeds. They go on a group hike every afternoon for the same reason.

I don't know how long they'll be able to keep it up as they grow, but I thought it was great.

> Tell me how this is different from the rest of the student loan industry. My student loan is until I've paid it all back, or I reach 65, or I die. It adds a top up to my income tax, taking 9% of everything over £17kpa earnt.

Student loan industry in the UK. In the US and most other places, income-based repayment is not a thing, the payments are due no matter how much or little you earn.

thatwebdude · 9 years ago
This occurs mostly in private student loans vs. federal ones. Private offers even fewer options than the federally mandated ones provide.

And then I never played baseball again.

I was really good at parks & rec basketball. I was so good that sometimes I'd score for the other team, too.

Completely as an aside, I thought it was going to be about a sales pitch.

Something I'd note is that the major league pitchers are pretty amazing, but I've gone to a few minor league games. In the minors (perhaps depending on the league), a pitcher rarely lasts for an entire game, and their accuracy goes to hell as their arm turns to rubber. Their last one or two pitches before being relieved could go practically anywhere.

The hitters also seem aware of this, and become more wary as a pitcher gets worn down.

thatwebdude · 9 years ago
There's still an idea of wearing the pitcher out in the majors. Of course, if you're an ace throwing no-nos then you can routinely go 110+ pitches per game. Most pitchers go about 60-70. The bullpen is stacked with varying arms and pitch types to throw off hitters their 3rd+ time through.

Well for one, Bieber is doing quite a bit of guitar stuff these days. I've actually been surprised by the amount of very obvious guitar sounds in pop in the last ~12-18 months or so. Try your local top 40 station with fresh ears, it's really quite prevalent.

You can argue about whether it's influential of course. Guitar isn't really being used in these songs in a way that carries the entire production, so tough to play on your own with any degree of satisfaction (again though Justin Bieber is an exception).

I was speaking more about "riffage" over presence, but I'll keep an ear out for it. If anything to say, "here, listen to this".

I clicked because I was curious what number of strings guitars were all secretly switching to. Why include such a superfluous detail in that headline? The cynic in me thinks this just clickbait getting harder to identify.
thatwebdude · 9 years ago
8. The answer is 8. 7 was so late-90's/early-00's. 9 string still gets laughs. But wait long enough and everyone will want to get lower.

The article mentions Guitar Center's $1.6 billion debt, but doesn't say why it has so much. The instrument market is flat, and online is taking a bite, but all of that debt is from a leveraged buyout by Bain Capital.

I ponder GC's choices. It was like a cancer in my major metropolitan area. Within 5-10 years all the mom-and-pop stores with a good solution of beginner and high-end equipment left and these things moved in. Coming from a millennial, it really isn't he way it used to be. Sad.

Norman's Rare Guitars is a fantastic YT channel for us who still enjoy guitars [0].

Thanks $deity not all new generation is into electronic. I have great hope when listening bands like Greta Van Fleet (ages between 18-21 years old) [1].

Slightly related, and assuming you like Blues, have you seen Joe Bonamassa's videos and tours of his collection? Very cool, too. Emphasis on Fender/Gibson, but still quite entertaining. I appreciate player-collectors.
