I've been a software "engineer" for over 20 years, and my personal experience is that software engineers are basically never happy.

Guessing this isn’t going to be popular here, but he’s right. AI has some use cases, but isn’t the world-changing paradigm shift it’s marketed as. It’s becoming clear the tech is ultimately just a tool, not a precursor to AGI.

Here’s a gift link to a NYT article that was posted a few minutes ago:

The food pyramid was published by the department of agriculture, it’s always been propaganda.

Would you rather consume a bowl of soup with a fly in it, or a 50 gallon drum with 1,000 flies in it? In which scenario are you more likely to fish out all the flies before you eat one?
teej · 2 months ago
Easier to skim 1000 flies from a single drum than 100 flies from 100 bowls of soup.

I work for a finance firm and everyone is wondering why we can store reams of client data with SaaS Company X, but not upload a trust document or tax return to AI SaaS Company Y.

My argument is we're in the Wild West with AI and this stuff is being built so fast with so many evolving tools that corners are being cut even when they don't realize it.

This article demonstrates that, but it does sort of beg the question as to why not trust one vs the other when they both promise the same safeguards.

It doesn't sound like your firm does any diligence that would actually prevent you from buying a vendor that has security flaws.

I've interfaced with some AI generated code and after several examples of finding subtle and yet very wrong bugs I now find that I digest code that I suspect coming from AI (or an AI loving coworker) with much much more scrutiny than I used to. I've frankly lost trust in any kind of care for quality or due diligence from some coworkers.

I see how the use of AI is useful, but I feel that the practitioners of AI-as-coding-agent are running away from the real work. How can you tell me about the system you say you have created if you don't have the patience to make it or think about it deeply in the first place?

Your coworkers were probably writing subtle bugs before AI too.

Despite using CTEs, I found the first query quite impenetrable. Could be because I don’t spend that much time reading non-trivial SQL queries.

I’ve been mostly using the `pg_stat_statements` table (the second technique) to find out whether my workload is read or write heavy, it’s plenty good in most situations.

pg_ system tables aren’t built for direct consumption. You typically have to massage them quite a bit to measure whatever statistic you need.
