> Larry Summers warned against “moral hazard lectures” and demanded SVB depositors be made whole immediately in 2023, months after calling student loan relief inflationary and unfair. Moral hazard for borrowers, bailouts for banks. Not lost on the public.

I can't believe I'm about to say something that could be construed as a defense of Larry Summers, but here goes: bank depositors are not engaging in risky behavior, they are putting cash in a bank. SVB did not get bailed out, it failed.

And as some of who supports the student loan forgiveness, yes, it is slightly inflationary but I think the benefits out weigh the inflationary effects.

Combine this with the "need" for nuclear (a perfectly cromulent but excessively expensive power source which has cheaper zero-carbon options), in the first paragraph, these comments that are not about the main topic severely undermine my ability to trust the rest of the essay.

The lesson to myself is to be narrow when I write, so as not to bring in a bunch of other positions that also need to be defended.

I'm doubtful that knowing how much politics matters, but only in a vague way, would have been enough to help them. Could someone who was obsessed with following the Trump administration's every move have predicted the tariffs in advance? I don't think financial markets priced them in?

let me guess... you don't follow politics either...

Honestly it still required a web search on my part to figure out it’s a WordPress plugin. That should be in the title.

i turned it on while i was heating some hot chocolate

told it, "hold on" as i was putting on my headset, they said "no problem". but then i tried to fill the empty airtime by saying, "i'm uhh heating some hot chocolate?"

the ai's response was something like, "ah.. (something) (something). data processing or is it the real kind with marshmallows"

not 100% on the exact dialog but 100% would not have been fooled by this. closed it there. no uncanny valley situation for me.

小红书 (pronounced Xiaohongshu) is the Chinese version of TikTok by Bytedance (EDIT: I’m wrong, it’s a different company, see below). It’s currently #1 on the USA App Store.

The people on there are super kind and accommodating to all the “American TikTok refugees” today! Lots of little Mandarin 101 classes, UI tutorials, and co-commiserating about government overreach.

I have a negative view of all of social media, but I think banning it is extremely politically unwise. Appreciate the hospitality of these users inviting us into their platform for a bit

> I also switched to only on-site interviews. My initial technical screenings are still done remotely.

Pro tip for anyone hiring engineers for remote positions:

Tell the applicant that there “might be” an in person technical assessment, even if you know the process will be 100% remote.

The amount of fake candidates at the moment is insane. The only thing that makes fake candidates self-select out is knowing there’s the possibility that they will be required to be somewhere in person.

Another trick I’ve used is saying “Oh, you live in Flint Michigan?? We happen to have an employee 20 minutes away, would you be open to meeting them?” And then suddenly they drop out of the interview process.

There are a lot of foreign scammers exploiting the WFH trend in the US to the point where it drowns out real candidates. It’s really bad.

i saw a tiktok where the guy had his phone propped up but not in view of his webcam, and basically the interviewer's mic was going through his phone on some llm and the llm was spitting out responses for him to reply to the soft questions his interviewer was asking. the interviewer also made him "quickly" turn on his screen sharing so he could see that his computer didn't have anything assisting him.

i haven't done an interview in a while, it's kinda crazy all the things people are pulling now for interviews on both sides. the process feels really broken.

the general public is expecting other people to protect them against it. "certainly someone (waves hands in the air) wouldn't allow it"

also combined with how the media has been reporting this, as though it's just another ruling.. certainly doesn't help.
