> The founder is known con-artist involved in such other things as solving nuclear fusion and stealing $2.5M in a Kickstarter scam.

Haha, am I still supposed to believe VC’s are competent, intelligent people who deserve their stature when they fall for scams that should be more obvious than a Nigerian prince scam.

Is it fair to characterize a founder of a failed startup as a con man? I.e. did he make claims that were factually untrue, and intentionally deceived investors?

The slide into hell is steep and slippery. I’m afraid we’re in a dark period of history that’s only going to get darker.

I want proponents of this tech to explain something to me. Why has the rate of stochastic terrorism only increased since the NSA and Palantir started spying on all of us? Isn’t the whole point of this to preempt those kinds of things?

What is the counterfactual? Without knowing the number of attacks prevented by these tools, we don't know what the baseline would be.

Holy false dichotomy Batman. The amount of crime you can reduce by funding decent law enforcement training and a working law system and just by having a general halfway welfare system dwarfs the effects these privacy invading solutions could ever produces. Absolute lunacy to believe that.
stri8ed · 3 months ago
Having adequate law enforcement training and funding, is not mutually exclusive with leveraging technology for more effective enforcement. In fact that's where some of the funding goes. I would be interested in seeing some data reflecting a reduction in crime as a result of increasing the welfare system, as you claim.

Slightly tangent question - they said that they have protected the public test set with a strong copyleft license to prevent training private models on them.

Does it actually work? Isn’t AI training so far simply ignores all license and copyright restrictions completely?

stri8ed · 3 months ago
Not a chance. Even if American companies did abide by it, there is no reason Chinese companies would. And good luck definitely proving that a model trained on it.

It's very unclear if OpenAI has been casually leaking things to create buzz, but a few days ago there was a pretty stunning pelican on a bike attempt: https://old.reddit.com/r/OpenAI/comments/1mettre/gpt5_is_alr...

In practice, it's very clear to me that the most important value in writing software with an LLM isn't it's ability to one-shot hard problems, but rather it's ability to effectively manage complex context. There are no good evals for this kind of problem, but that's what I'm keenly interested in understanding. Show me GPT-5 can move through 10 steps in a list of tasks without completely losing the objective by the end.

That problem along with its many solutions are surely littered throughout the training data. Not to mention, it would be trivial to overfit on that problem. I don't know why people still reference that.

Really concerning that what appears to be the top model is in the family of models that inadvertently starting calling it's self mechahitler
stri8ed · 5 months ago
It's a result of the system prompt, not the base model itself. Arguably, this just demonstrates that the model is very steerable, which is a good thing.

We’re enabling a huge swath of humanity being put out of work so a handful of billionaires can become trillionaires.

It would happen in China regardless what is done here. Removing billionaires does not fix this. The ship has sailed.
