We had an Omnimax theatre in Vancouver, BC, and I always loved going to it as a kid. The little introduction before any feature was a highlight where they showed off the capabilities and turned on the lights behind the screen at each speaker so the audience could actually see where the sound was coming from.

I'd love to see the rest of your postmortem template! I never thought about adding a "Where did we get lucky?" question.

I recently realized that one question for me should be, "Did you panic? What was the result of that panic? What caused the panic?"

I had taken down a network, and the device led me down a pathway that required multiple apps and multiple log ins I didn't have to regain access. I panicked and because the network was small, roamed and moved all devices to my backup network.

The following day, under no stress, I realized that my mistake was that I was scanning a QR code 90 degrees off from it's proper orientation. I didn't realize that QR codes had a proper orientation and figured that their corner identifiers handled any orientation. Then it was simple to gain access to that device. I couldn't even replicate the other odd path.

The standard SRE one recommended by Google has a lucky section. We tend to use it to talk about getting unlucky too.

After nearly 40 years, Shep has finally been released!

See the Crash magazine "Unclear User" parody. Page 125 of the August 1985 edition for context. [0]

That you remember this from one month before I was born is incredible.

Author here. I've been looking at the 386 if anyone has questions. This post was inspired by userbinator's discussion on HN a couple of weeks ago about how many transistors there are in the 386.

Great post! Any idea how the turbo button worked? It seems like, given the transistor difference between the 8086 and 386, that merely decreasing the clock frequency wouldn't be enough?

The wifi router sees you (a bit like a mini radar), but someone outside your premises would still have to hack the router? Or do ISPs already have that access?

Also curious to know how far wifi routers 'see'? If it's more than a few meters there could be more potential surveillance by wifi router than by cctv!

Look up TR-069. Always use your ISP-supplied router in bridge/modem mode only.

Are you really quoting fucking human trafficker Andrew Tate on economics?

Electronic funds transfer (including credit cards) increase the velocity of money significantly. This means more transactions, which means more overall wealth creation.

To say nothing of the fact that of that 1.5% fee, I'm recovering most, all, or more than it with things like cashback, rewards points, etc.

Poor idea to found a startup in a field you don’t believe in. Waste of time from the start.

Roll-friggin-eyes Scotsman. You think everyone that founds a startup for, say, B2B data integration Really Believes In It? Or just that there's money to be made?

I love Dr. Collier's videos. Her method of story telling/video essay is extremely unconventional but very effective.

Me too bestie, I haven't taken physics since undergrad but I appreciate that it's a layer of understanding above popular science (that never covers any of the math) while remaining accessible.
