Everyone is in agreement, this is impressive stuff. Mind blowing, even. But have the good people at Google decided why exactly we need to build the torment nexus?

Could somebody explain why there is so much negativity towards Thinking Machines in this thread? I realize that they haven't publicly announced a product yet but presumably the VCs have some idea of what Thinking Machines is building, and they have some pretty significant OpenAI talent on board, including Murati herself. Some amount of skepticism is warranted, of course, but a lot of these comments read as closer to hostility.

Oh that’s because the good people of HN have decreed a butlerian jihad

It’s funny to consider the parallels between the tapestry’s return and the campaigns for repatriation of the British Museum’s many stolen artefacts

I'm surprised, I thought the digital imaging was the standard now. The eye doctor I've been going to for several years now only does the new method and doesn't even offer dilation afaik.

Here in AUS, essentially every single optometrist requires digital imaging. Oh, and it’s subsidised by the government. You don’t pay a single cent for a prescription. Bonus: If you have private optical health insurance it will likely cover two pairs of prescription glasses per year. Not too bad a deal if you ask me!

Under capitalism, it's reasonable to charge for products and services.

The jury is still out on "companies like Bitwarden, Gitlab, and New Vector". Kudos to them for pioneering novel business models.

Interesting. In regards to your first point, do you have justification to back your claim? I’d be interested in reading more, or perhaps seeing an example?

Okay, someone tell me why JVM isn't it? Is there something fundamentally flawed in the JVM that can't be fixed?

The abolition of private property ought to do it

Kind of? he never actually used the word glowie AFAIK. 4chan is the origin.
slj · 2 years ago
He coined the phrase which the word is descended from, infamously, on a video livestream
