It never ceases to amaze me how google search _used_ to work great for stuff like this. You could just type "tbray {obscure term on a blog entry from 10 years ago}" and bam, instant result.

I guess google generates more ad revenue with users forlornly paging through search results, hoping against hope that what they're looking for is there somewhere...

ADC = Analog to digital converter

Takes an analog signal from something like light or sound and convert it into a digital signal.

Acronyms introduced in an article should be spelled out at least once please.

The traditional taxi industry was rife with corruption, bad experiences, and poor service in many jurisdictions before uber/lyft. As terrible of a human being that I think Travis Kalanick is, it was only going to take lawbreaking to overcome such a tainted system.

Medallion systems often prevented any competition, sometimes to absurd effect. The number of licenced taxis often didn't keep pace with population growth, sometimes even staying flat. Many drivers didn't own their own medallians then had to rent from owners, often making little money. In my city (Toronto) cabs were often dirty, broken, refused short distance fares (illegal) and smelled of cigarette smoke that was obviously from the driver.

Examples (paywalls, but you get the idea):

I've never been a huge user of either, but my worst Uber ride was much better than my best taxi ride.

Generally you should trust science on matters of "is". But on matters of "ought" science only bears indirectly.
slices · a year ago
ideally, science would be the best available information on "is". When the science is i.e. funded by a tobacco company and regarding the safety of tobacco, we should be skeptical. How much of current science falls in a similar class?

I am taking a graduate level public health course and this trade off is literally covered in the first lecture its something they call prevention paradox. It's surprising to see that the head of the NIH would say something like this when it's literally part of the curriculum for public health. I'm so tired of political opinions masqueraded as we know better than the experts or we know better than the scientist.

how many public health officials acted with awareness of the prevention paradox during covid?

The benefit of EVs comparatively is that the drivetrain is much simpler than an ICE vehicle. If a motor dies, unbolt it and swap in a new one. Same thing for the battery pack. Sure, it's inconvenient, but if these Chinese companies are willing to offer the same warranties as American manufacturers, then what's the problem?
slices · a year ago
if your cheap Chinese EV starts on fire and burns down your house, it might not have been such a good deal

Teslas are one of the few vehicles where you can actually get the model at the lowest price they advertise because they are all delivery. Almost every other make and model will show you a price in their advertisements that you can’t find anywhere and make you wait forever to order one. I’ve often thought it was deceptive advertising because the price they show in their TV ad is one almost nobody actually gets or likely could. I’m pretty sure Lexus has a version of the RX with cloth seats and no touchscreenthat they only make one of just so they can use the price in their ads.

I don’t know how many people actually opt for the lowest end version of Teslas but I believe you can get them with essentially no more difficulty than any other version.

true. I wasted over a year waiting to get a base model Toyota Sienna, and eventually realized they might as well not exist.

PHEV means two drive trains, more parts and in turn more weight.

Do you really want a plugin car that loses its charge in 30 minutes?

slices · a year ago
Since 90% of my car trips are under 30 minutes, yes that would be worthwhile.

The other 10% are beyond any practical battery range, so a BEV isn't an option.
