The explanation is quite good but is there even more detail on what the assembly instructions are doing on a line by line basis? I’ve only written MIPS assembly and that was a long time ago.

Bit stupid crunching it by revenue. Obviously the long routes generate the most rev, but they also have the highest fuel costs.

Sydney to Melbourne is #2 and is barely a 1 hour flight.

You know it's a good paper when you reach the end and ask "is that it?" and yet no one else has thought of it before.

Side note: local-global approximation seems to do well in graphics and visual tasks. For example in the field of alpha matting the state of the art for a while was KNN Matting which sampled locally and globally. Most methods since then have taken a similar approach.

Yes! I thought it was my DNS or something. It only happens on mobile.

thats afaik not done because of the performance overhead.

most requests take only a fraction of a second to answer. to actually monitor threads on that frequency you'd need not only a significant portion for the monitoring (ever looked at the CPU usage with running top?) but also for the network communication to send that over to the lb, which needs to process the data for load balancing

sjtrny · 9 years ago
You wouldn't need to monitor individual threads and processes. Only average response time for each server or total CPU load.

Why not just use a PID controller to load balance?

Good ol' HN. These folks are pushing the boundaries like nobody else, advancing humanity more than a thousand Facebooks or Snapchats ever could, but if they express pride in their work it's a "circle jerk."
sjtrny · 9 years ago
Well the advances remain to be seen in the decades to come. I could understand that level of excitement for putting a person on Mars but not for a satellite deployment or ISS restocking mission.

Maybe it's just a cultural difference but there is something unsettling and cringey about seeing those employees act so enthusiastic.

Is it genuine? Maybe for some employees. But the camera setup makes me think there is some expectation placed upon the employees that they will be there to cheer. It's not natural.
