sim_card_map commented on How I lost my fear of flying (2011)   fsgworkinprogress.com/201... · Posted by u/pelt

I flew enough as a child and then with my first job to be comfortable with flying. Never really considered fear. Then I took a flight back from Vegas to NYC and it ended up in an emergency state as both hydraulic systems were lost on takeoff [1]. It was fascinating to experience fear creep into the physical environment. Fear of the unknown as we all heard the obviously-bad noise during takeoff. You could tell we were flying in circles above the desert.

The crew did not communicate anything for a long time, so imaginations took over. That was the worst part, the inciting incident.

Then one passenger started freaking out. Then another. It snowballed so quickly. Crying, screaming, drinking, trying to call loved ones. The college-aged girl in front of me was in tears and the older man next to her held her as if he were her father. My buddy seated next to me had a full panic attack, drenched in sweat. Bottles of prescription pills were passed around from row to row.

The stench of vomit was unavoidable. Flying in turbulent skies for hours didn't help the situation.

About 4-5 hours later we made an emergency landing - one of those in which we were instructed to lean all the way forward with our head on our arms. The landing was relatively smooth. Then I realized we were really far from the airport, on the outskirts of the runways, and a bunch of emergency fire and rescue vehicles were staged, waiting for us.

I've never seen so many people de-board a plane and sprint for the bar so fast.

Since then, I have a low level of anxiety when flying, mostly during the takeoff. My senses stay on guard in anticipation of hearing something go wrong. But it's not fear. I try not to allow that to happen.

I've lost hope of getting a 4-4.5'' phone ever.

All companies are obsessed with these phablets.

I have been waiting on this announcement to buy a new Mac, but now that they are out, I don't think I will buy one.

The prices are 2x a Macbook Air, but the utility for me doesn't match. If the 14" was closer to the previous 13" MBP price of $1500 I would be ordering one now, but I will be getting a Macbook Air instead.

Note to Veterans: Apple gives a 10% Veterans discount on everything, including the refurbished store.

you get +8 GB of RAM, +256 GB SSD, a much faster CPU, and a 120 hz display for the extra $1000

> If the chance of me getting hospitalized is so low to begin with

I just don't think this is true. Again, look at the states in the US with the lowest levels of vaccination. They are running out of ICU beds due to the amount of cases.

I'm not sure where you're located. Maybe there's a low amount of cases there, but in general, the risk of being hospitalized (and maybe not having a bed to go to) is rather high. The delta variant is also affecting young people more than other variants before it. I personally think getting the COVID vaccine is a smart choice.

In terms of vaccinated people still spreading the virus, the idea with vaccination is to reduce the chance of being hospitalized. That still seems like a big benefit to me.

It is true. There's an Oxford Covid risk calculator, and for an average 20 something person, the risk of hospitalization is ~0.002%.

I hope this doesn't come across badly but: NimForum is an open source project, as such I would encourage you or anyone to help improve its efficiency. I think there is a lot of low hanging fruit here and I'd happily help with any patches that fix them.

Back in 2018 when I implemented the basis for this modern reimplementation of the Nim forum I focused on the functionality and a solid CI so that we can easily accept others' contributions without fear of regressions. Unfortunately I had only 2 solid weeks to make this a reality and optimising the code size didn't make the cut.

Improving its efficiency would mean re-writing it entirely, since it's an SPA app with 4 MB of JavaScript.

Doesn't work without JS.

Pass.
