I think more-stuff-lower-quality is kind of inevitable, but I am happy with that general direction. I have run into a lot of annoying things like and including your example. This roadmap would be better if it had a simple way to submit and vote for feature requests like other public roadmaps.

Thanks, @ianwalter. We plan on having a public feedback repo soon - but in the meantime, if you want to submit ideas, please check out https://support.github.com/contact/feedback.

> Am I wrong for presuming that the people who would most care about GitHub's public roadmap probably aren't even GitHub users?

I think so. I'm a GitHub user and I like being able to view their roadmap.

Think about it this way. GitHub is a giant piece of software that developers use. Software changes, and developers are particularly sensitive to this. We're constantly fixing bugs and factoring code to support dependency shifts (or choosing to snapshot ourselves at some preestablished point of stability).

Given our sensitivity to change and how important GitHub's product is to our productivity it's crucial that we're not hit with surprises. A properly communicated roadmap helps avoid that -- thought admittedly it does take some work on our part as customers to parse it. That said this is no different than reading release notes and documentation for the software and libraries we use elsewhere in our day to day.

Thank you! We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Let us know if you have any other feedback on what we can provide you to plan better. And thanks for your use of GitHub!

Thanks for the feedback on this. We are rebuilding Explore and improving the feeds on it soon, and would love to chat with you if you’re interested. Drop me a line (shankuniyogi at github.com).

If there would be no plans to deprecate the program, why the blog post would have been written?
shankun · 6 years ago
I will do a follow-up post on this, once I've learned more. Please stay tuned.

There must be quite a story behind this - will you be putting up a post-mortem ? (Post mortems of business "outages" are usually more instructional)
shankun · 6 years ago
Yes. We will. Please stay tuned.

If possible, it might be helpful to share a little detail on how it happened. You can imagine that it did happens signals at the very least that someone with power/influence got this post out there in the first place.
shankun · 6 years ago
That is a very reasonable ask. I'll be doing a post-mortem, and talking to all the individuals involved - and will do a followup post on it on the same blog. Please stay tuned. And, again, our sincere apologies.

Hi all, this is Shanku Niyogi. I run the Product team at GitHub. I sincerely apologize for this post. We screwed up. This post was made in error, and we are retracting it. We are always looking to improve our programs for developers, and are working on improvements. But this is not the way to make changes. And it is NOT a goal to end our program. Sorry for the confusion.

This is awesome, interactive CLIs are great for simple use cases. I hope they continue to have support for non-interactive scenarios so that automation can continue to work (apologies if I missed that in the article).
shankun · 8 years ago
Thanks. Yes, this is completely additive to the existing SDK.

Still requires Python 2.7, right? What year is it again?
shankun · 8 years ago
Thanks for the feedback. We are actively working on Python 3 support. Stay tuned!

AWS also has something similar called AWS Shell: https://github.com/awslabs/aws-shell

With the interactive CLI, we set out with a similar mission as other cloud CLIs - our first priority was helping users use the GCP CLIs including gcloud and gsutil. With our Interactive CLI, we’ve tried to build something that doesn’t just help new users discover what they can do, but also helps make more advanced users productive, for scenarios such as piping between commands, and shell redirection for read-edit-write workflows. The Interactive CLI provides a full shell environment, and isn’t restricted exclusively to the use of GCP tools.

Interactive CLIs like are a little different than a "cloud shell", which provides a fully cloud-hosted CLI environment. If you want a fully curated cloud-hosted option, check out https://cloud.google.com/shell/. Note that the Cloud Shell includes the Cloud SDK.
