I've invested in junior mining stocks. The rare earths are hot right now (12 Oct 2025). As a whole the group is supposed to lose money every year. It's just a question of will they lose a little or a lot. I see people rushing in right now because China is restricting the export of rare earths. They don't know the flaws these companies have. But they will :)

That sounds awful. Have you tried thinking what’s the worst thing that could happen? It’s no so bad.

In the 1980's they wouldn't let a guy from Apple keep all his stuff with him. He and his buddies got off the plane, maybe to hire a car I don't know. I think he was talking about driving.

>Let’s say you need to get your oven fixed—Alexa+ will be able to navigate the web, use Thumbtack to discover the relevant service provider, authenticate, arrange the repair, and come back to tell you it’s done—there’s no need to supervise or intervene.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. I don't trust an LLM to choose between two brands of dish soap for me let alone pick a contractor, schedule a repair, and make a payment. Even if there was a demo showing this working in a sterile environment, reality is so complex that something is certain to go wrong. Even the "simple" task of summarizing news had so many catastrophic failures that Apple had to pull it from the market.

Amazon is making bold claims about the capabilities of their voice assistant to sell their subscription service so that they can make the Alexa division profitable, but if any of their claims were real, they would be demoing rather than writing science fiction in a press release.

Your home might have a single provider you've previously contracted with for fixing your fridge, air conditioner,... We had such a service.

I have a nation state interest in getting wealthy and trading our comparative advantage. Not paranoid delusions and one-sided brinksmanship.

China can produce things cheaper than we can. “Industrial policy” to make a wealthy nation like the US a competitive low-cost manufacturing hub are delusional. Let us focus on what we are good at and other countries focus on what they are good at.

Realpolitik is making our country wealthier and rationally approaching emerging risks, not banning cheap cars and solar panels because other countries are too good at making them. Let alone engaging in trade wars with our allies and banning acquisitions from Japan.

We have to have a dependable supply chain. We found out during Covid we couldn't obtain the goods we needed. It doesn't matter how cheap goods are if they can't be purchased. China is a predatory, mercantilist economy. That cares more about providing its citizens with jobs than profit. They can ship goods under cost and drive competitors out of business. When it comes to cars I'll bet our tariffs haven't been anything like for example European tariffs on US cars. It's not a fair game with China. They'll supply us with hardware for our grid, but won't use our hardware in their grid. China blocks our internet.

I have a question

I am not a lawyer, but isn’t doing this (including landing pages which promise a product that doesn’t exist) technically “false advertising”, and a large company can be sued (and theoretically a small one too) for punitive damages rather than actual ones? Any lawyers in the house can chime in.

PS: I recently was reminded of this when a 24-hours gas station store was closed with a note on the door saying it’s closed at night, but with the giant 24 hour signs still on the building, and on Google it had said 24 hours. The store isn’t selling essential things. But what if it had been the actual gas station and the people ran out of gas?

I got rid of 9 or 12 domain names because they had "Speedy" in the name. I believe some company was sued because a customer thought the company wasn't we'll speedy.

Find a problem you are capable of solving. Make sure the problem has a paying audience and is worth your while. Work on the solution to that problem. Focus! Learn what you have to learn to come up with the solution and sell it.

(Put off learning all you need to know about investing, health, and science. You can spend the entire day without getting any work done. Once you're independently wealthy you can spend your time as you wish.)

I have a Notes folder containing 'subject' text files. Notes/crypto.txt Notes/docker.txt Notes/equity.txt ... anything and everything one day I'll divide them into subfolders Notes/geopolitics/zeihan.txt Notes/programming/languages/rust.txt

if a text file isn't good enough, or there needs to be an image embedded, I use other file types

And a Documents folder containing 'subject' article files. Documents/Programming/Languages/Rust ...
