Guess what? Actual title is "Here's how they ...". As usual, HN automunges it to make it mean something different and if anything more clickbaity than the original title. Can't we stop doing this?
sahruum9 · 2 months ago
I don't think I follow. What is HN doing to the title? Deleting the word "Here's"?

Sorry to be a little off-topic, but I really like the layout of your site. I'm on a convertible and I switched to tablet mode part way through reading this and was pretty delighted to see all the notes in the margin pop into inline info boxes.

You have 120 wifi-connected devices at home?? What kind of devices? 100 smart light bulbs or something like that?

I'm just curious – I'm a relatively techy person and I have maybe 15 devices on my whole home network.

sahruum9 · 2 months ago
A smart home will definitely run those numbers up. I have about 60 WiFi devices and another 45 Zigbee devices and I'm only about halfway done with the house.

the last point got me.

How can you idiomatically do a read only request with complex filters? For me both PUT and POST are "writable" operations, while "GET" are assumed to be read only. However, if you need to encode the state of the UI (filters or whatnot), it's preferred to use JSON rather than query params (which have length limitations).

So ... how does one do it?

sahruum9 · 6 months ago
There was a proposal[1] a while back to define a new SEARCH verb that was basically just a GET with a body for this exact purpose.

They aren't getting rid of the Chromecast streaming. Google TV does both Chromecast and the Android interface.

The one difference is that Google TV runs the app for service if installed and streams with that. It is nice to use the remote when streaming instead of pulling out phone to pause or change volume.

sahruum9 · a year ago
And if you aren't logged in to that app on the Google TV, you aren't allowed to cast. It's incredibly annoying.

I also find that line hilarious, but maybe it's intended as in "size adjustable down to the millimeter".

CAD programs are generally unitless. You can design a box with OpenSCAD "down to a micrometer" if you want.

Designing a joint that works well also will poorly 3d-printed parts is usually what matters, but it's not like we're lacking customizable solutions:

The STL format is unitless, as is OpenSCAD, but the vast majority of CAD software uses units.

For an ecosystem as large as Erlang/OTP, it actually has surprising little investment relative to its size.

An area impacted the most, is R&D into improving raw performance.

It's effectively just Lukas Larsson & Björn Gustavsson trying to solve this problem for the past 10-years or more.

Their work is hugely appreciated, yet they get little to no support on this front.

It's definitely beyond my technical abilities to help, but I would financially sponsor focus in this area.

Does anyone know how I can donate/sponsor more focus on improving raw performance?

I don't have a direct answer for you, but the Erlang Ecosystem Foundation seems like a good place to start.

> it’s crazy to see how much effort is duplicated and coordination needed even in cases where there’s no public api necessary.

Probably because they decided to use microservices (read: distributed systems) for no God-loving reason.

sahruum9 · 3 years ago
It's a distributed system either way.

Acknowledging that opens up a whole world of already thought through solutions to problems in distributed systems.

There’s a tool called “iSeek” listed here, in ‘96. I thought the lowercase “i” prefix began its popularity with the iMac in 1998. Did Ken Segall not come up with it, but just ran with a trend that was already going on? What was the first /^i[A-Z][a-z]+$/ product name?

Linksys released an "iPhone" in 1998 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_iPhone).
