How do you invite the fugitives to such an event? If you know how to reach them you can probably arrest them no?
rtsil · 2 months ago
> For the marshals, arresting fugitives while away from home was significantly safer as they are often caught unarmed and off-guard.

Predictable...but are those aholes wrong...? :-) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44013692

Economics violates Popper demarcation criterion. Economic theories can't be falsified because you can't run controlled experiments on economies, rewind history, or isolate variables.

When models fail, economists adjust assumptions ...

Unfalsifiable = Unscientific.

The main reason people pay expensive ESPs is deliverability, which is practically impossible when self-hosting when it comes to marketing, non-transactional emails, and in any case much more expensive than any ESP subscription.

How does Fertit position itself in relation to that?

I never heard the term "cut" outside drugs that often involved putting something stronger but less expensive in
rtsil · 5 months ago
Assuming it's translated literally from French, and the meaning of the French verb "couper" hasn't changed since the Middle Ages, it means mixing with water, and is a widely used expression in French.

I always question how accurate these types of accounts were. Even if she wrote this after his death, his successor obviously wouldn’t look too kindly on it being disparaging.

The article says the depiction may reflect idealization, and is also a deliberate inspirational portrayal.

https://www.who.int/news/item/24-07-2024-hunger-numbers-stub...

Hunger worldwide has been getting worse for the last quarter century or so.

733 million people don’t have food security. I think about 5-10 million die every year from starvation.

In medieval times there were famines, but they were caused by there not being enough food to go around due to disease or bad harvests.

Today millions of people starve even if there is no bad harvest or animal pandemics.

rtsil · 5 months ago
And malnutrition isn't only about lack of food, it's also about mediocre quality of food:

> Similarly, new estimates of adult obesity show a steady increase over the last decade, from 12.1 percent (2012) to 15.8 percent (2022). Projections indicate that by 2030, the world will have more than 1.2 billion obese adults. The double burden of malnutrition – the co-existence of undernutrition together with overweight and obesity – has also surged globally across all age groups.

Obesity will soon, if not already, become a major public health disaster in poor countries.

Surprisingly, it isn't. You can change the language in your google account and it will take that into account for what to translate and into what language, but you can't turn it off completely.

I don't know who thought this was a good user experience, because it's one of the most frustrating features I've ever had to deal with. I'm german, but almost all of the things I watch are in english. So usually I will just ignore recommendations with german titles. Except I can't do that anymore, because there's no guarantee that youtube didn't randomly decide to translate the title of an english video into german. And recently, they've added auto-translated audio, which is even worse, because now I'm opening an english video and a terrible robotic german voice is talking to me and I manually need to switch to the original source.

It's also not consistent behavior. It's not like all videos on the front page are looking like they're in german. It's just some of them and afaik there's no way to tell.

And you genuinely can't turn it off completely. Incredibly frustrating and I'm just puzzled by the thought-process that lead to this decision. This would be a pretty cool feature if it was consistently applied and freely configurable.

I'm in France, but my Google, browsers and devices languages are English. So Youtube randomly auto-dubs (and auto-translates the title of) some French videos into English, and some English videos into French. But they're never the same videos depending on the devices or the browsers. However, the automatic subtitles during the preview remain in the original langage.

An even better visualization of the size of the Solar System. It shows traveling from the Sun out to forever at the speed of light. Be prepared to spend hours watching the paint dry. I suspect traveling in space will be like war, long periods of boredom punctuated by brief moments of sheer terror.

Not if it's at the speed of light, the journey will be instantaneous for the (massless) traveller.

Doesn’t it just use the primary language you select in your account settings? Unless you’re talking about using it in incognito, in which case it does get annoying when it assumes a language based on region without asking.
rtsil · 6 months ago
If only it was that easy. I'm French living in France. My account settings are in English, my browsers and apps (phone, TV) are in English but my Youtube region is France. So Youtube serves me:

- French videos auto-dubbed with AI and with the titles auto-translated in English.

- English videos auto-dubbed with AI and with the titles auto-translated in French.

- French videos not dubbed, but with the titles auto-translated in English.

- English videos not dubbed, but with the titles auto-translated in French.

- French videos kept as is.

- English videos kept as is.

Also, Youtube keeps suggesting me French accents videos, even though I never watched a similar video (but watched videos on American accents and Spanish accents years ago)
