I actually like the icons from his example of Google Docs, it makes it easy for me to locate an action type I’m looking for (add/delete etc) without reading the labels, then once I narrowed it down - I can read the label to find the precise action I want.

All of the Google Docs icons are really thoughtfully designed, with distinctive silhouettes. Instead of making 5 tiny illegible variations on inserting a row/column/etc, they just use the + symbol. Because the symbol is the same, your eye is then drawn to the differing text on the right.

Some of the Apple ones really are ridiculous, like the ones around window management and copy/pasting. Even blown up to fullscreen size, you wouldn't have a chance of guessing what they do. But at display size, they are just plain illegible. Having them there is just a visual distraction.

Dozens of Scottish independence X accounts ‘went dark’ after Iranian internet blackout (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/06/25/scottish-ind...)

Iran is actively working hard to make us hate our fellow citizens. That matters.

More concretely, a bunch of Scottish nationalist accounts were unearthed as Iranian by the recent X location switch-on

Such a shame Freya doesn't seem to post regularly anywhere these days. I miss her tweets.

I think she's in the mines working on her Blender/Maya alternative, Half Edge.

What's with the entire dev board crammed in there? Is that... normal? What board is it?

The hardware acceleration is disabled in driver. Even using VLC you won't have acceleration for HEVC.
rozab · 23 days ago
That seems like the opposite of what the quoted Reddit post says:

>those with newer machines needed to either have the HEVC codec from the Microsoft Store removed entirely from [Microsoft Media Foundation] or have hardware acceleration disabled

From this it sounds like it's been disabled at a lower level, but Windows still expects it to be there and so fails to decode streams unless hwaccel is disabled

rozab commented on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright   bbc.com/news/articles/c1j... · Posted by u/YeGoblynQueenne

I think most vehicles are operating with their headlamps adjusted too high. I think the majority are now completely out of spec [1]. My normal lights are very respectably adjusted and are the older dimmer type, but my full beams are blinding - I rarely ever use them. A few times a driver comes towards me with full beams on, I flash mine and light up the entire night.

The quality of driver is also decreasing. One of our MPs computed the data and discovered "Since 2016, 1,367,942 foreign drivers have been issued a driving licence without taking a UK test". There are apparently 42.1 mn licenses [2], so ~1/30 never took a UK test. It's getting dangerous out there.

The source of this claim, which you helpfully did not provide, is Rupert Lowe, a far-right UK politician and shite-merchant who is so toxic he got kicked out of Reform. He does not give any indication as to where his number came from.

This reciprocal scheme only applies to certain countries: the EU/EAA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Korea, Switzerland, etc.

I think when you are blaming things like headlight brightness on those bloody foreigners, it's time to do some self-reflection.

Individual animals can be tame. Only entire populations can be domesticated. Two different things.
rozab · a month ago
That doesn't mean the process is happening naturally as asserted. For instance, wild black wolves in the US got this trait from hybridization with domesticated dogs.

I was foolish enough to buy SanDisk.

SanDisk flashdrives get extremely hot and die in months.

The warranty process is time consuming and tedious.

I stick to Samsung flashdrives now.

SanDisks are very frequently fake, even in brick and mortar stores. Could it be you had a fake one?

At least 50% of the YouTube promoted videos I get are crypto currency scams where some paid actor walks you though deploying an eth contract that empties your wallet. I report every one and nothing changes :(

The recent YouTube updates made me disabled my adblocker for a bit. Almost every ad I got was a scam. I reported one to YouTube, a deepfake investment scam. They actually got back to me and said they had removed the ad.

2 days later, I got the same ad again.
