recyclelater commented on The EV Transition Is Harder Than Anyone Thinks   spectrum.ieee.org/the-ev-... · Posted by u/jnord

Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good. A fossil fuel vehicle too takes a lot of non-renewables to get it ready to drive. Yet it also needs even more to keep it moving. And changing all their motors to electric is more work than replacing fewer power plants.
recyclelater · 2 years ago
You’ve got the perfect wrong. The good is plug-in hybrid with 40 miles range and 1/8th the battery. 8 built for every electric car. Solves 90% of personal transportation needs with electric alone. The fox on full electric is criminal imho.

I know what you're referring to but don't think this is one of those cases.

The affidavit is very thorough about what was found. Starts on page 3.

FYI to anyone curious, do not read the affidavit if you do not want to have pretty horrific images of infants etc in your mind.

Hard disagree. My tap water has a strong chlorine taste, I hate it. In my Brita pitcher, it's totally gone. Just tastes like water again.

It's the total opposite of "practically nothing", it does exactly what I bought it for -- effectiveness 100%.

recyclelater · 2 years ago
It’s still probably not doing anything, chlorine readily evaporates out of water left in a pitcher. It’s a common technique used by indoor growers of certain plants - leave a bucket out for a day.

My lived experience is I sit safely in my suburban home with my children, comfortably collecting a salary to argue points of planning for software development. I work from home and very rarely leave the house. I am unwilling to go down to the local protests or whatever to “see what’s up” because I’m essentially willing to accept zero risk to my person while my children are growing up.

I need accurate news to know what’s going on in the wider world because my day to day is so insular, and I’d hazard I’m not an anomaly here. It’s annoying because I feel like half of my friends are crazy but I’m not sure which half it is. My wife is glitching out and believes all sorts of crazy stuff but heck, maybe it’s true. Maybe the world has always been like this, and I’m just old enough to realize that the news media is bullshit. But it just felt like the older journalists that have retired now were less desperately and smugly trying to convince me that they’re correct than the ones working now. I wish I felt like I could trust literally anyone beyond my immediate family.

recyclelater · 3 years ago
I am not weighing in on the article or any commentary with this statement…You don’t sound healthy and might want to do a little self evaluation. Never leaving the house, not trusting anyone, thinking your wife is glitching, all sound outside the norm, even if what you are observing is true. You should still be able to do basic risk analysis and leave the house.

Sorry for the bluntness here.

Back in 2003-2007, I worked for a home builder who vertically integrated and went for maximized modularity. In '05 we expanded our truss yard to 2 large presses and 4 automated saws, and added a wall-framing yard what worked the same way as the truss yard. Add in that they bought a concrete company to do the slabs, and a 2-story house could go from pour to sheeting in 35 days. Plumbing, electrical, and finishing jobs could take as little as an additional 30.

Since the parent company dissolved them in '08, I haven't seen any of the other subsidiaries using the same techniques or scheduling, and it's always rather surprised me. They invested literally 10s of millions of dollars into us figuring out how to make it all work, then trashed the knowledge.

The builder of the new neighborhood going up near me uses these techniques for all rooflines. They still frame on site for flooring and walls, but they crane on pre built trusses for the roofs, built nearby.

My guess is that you come across as either a eeyore or an asshole. I do not know you and you don’t give enough information in your post, however I can’t think of any other reason you wouldn’t be hirable, unless you are unrealistic about your own skills and capabilities. If you are open to suggestions, I would recommend spending a significant amount of effort on the “how to win friends and influence people” side of the equation.

I will hire the nice optimistic less skilled engineer over the mopey, pessimistic, more experienced engineer every day of the week.

> how does high carb + low glucose work together?

Not always, but typically, higher-fiber carbs don't spike your blood glucose as much.

Practically, this means having steel cut oatmeal for breakfast instead of Cheerios. Prepare them savory instead of sweet, like you might with grits.

Steel cut oatmeal + an egg + 1tbsp cottage cheese + hot sauce is an amazing breakfast

recyclelater · 3 years ago
I used to think the same thing, but tried a continuous glucose monitor. I found out steel cut oats were actually really bad for my glucose levels, spiking them into unhealthy levels around 160. More than whole wheat bread and other carbs.

Obviously this is highly subjective from person to person however reading other anecdotal evidence from people who have used a CGM, it’s pretty common.

In other words don’t assume it’s a low glycemic food because the internet says it is.

Anon account so not going into details, but stumbled into it hobbying and realized there could be a market. Cranked at it to the exclusion of everything else and made it work.

i am the owner of a bootstrapped and now 30+ person company, with three kids at home. it took something like 7 years of 10-12 hour days to get our business off the ground, with many many many 7 day work weeks.

now post-startup, i barely have time to keep things going at the level required to maintain excellence, while not neglecting my young family. lots of push/pull around work, and lots of arguments and frustration with my wife. i honestly couldn't imagine getting a new business off the ground right now, where you have to do everything.

I mean, I was member of sports teams. Sometimes lifelong friendship evolves, but it is not nearly automatic nor super frequent.

Way more likely is that when people stop going for whatever reason, the relationship ends. Getting injured or sick or having new kid and less time or whatever all means you disappear.

This is a function of your skill and desire not a deficiency of the social activity
