“As for federal support, TI got $1.6 billion of CHIPS Act funding, and a whopping 35% investment tax credit from Trump’s big bill passed in July.”

So how much ownership is the US gov gonna get in this one?

TI is a going concern, no bailout necessary

Universal healthcare is supported by something like 60 or 70% of Americans. Don’t be fooled by those trying to make it into a party issue.

Agreed, it’s crazy. Making healthcare contingent on employment is barbaric but aligned with other practices (like W2 tax withholding) where the government effectively deputizes your employer to enforce the civic contract.

Between medicare, medicaid, Tricare, chips, etc around half the people in the United States are already on some sort of government supplied medical insurance.

Getting to 60% for for such a deal shouldn't be too hard!

I still feel that something like Medicare for All should just be an issue for those that are all about free markets and entrepreneurship.

Maybe there are millions in America that only keep their jobs for the health benefits rather than starting a 1-2 person business.

It just seems so silly.

"something like Medicare for All"

If that's the case, then you've never looked into the complexity of Medicare.

Medicaid for all, and concierge services for those who want to pay exalted prices for exalted services -- that may make sense.

Did we manage to accidentally make something live twice as long and then abandon efforts to replicate the results?

55M visa holders ???

I had no idea it was that many.

I thought 18M undocumented was a high %age!

342M people in the US. 16% visa holders

I wonder how that compares to other countries?

I’m not convinced because all of these examples gave people a pittance. $1000 a month at most? Give me a break. If someone is drowning, you can’t give their arm a little tug and claim that as strong evidence that pulling them out of the water won’t save them.

Financial aid programs began so that deserving students could get to college and afford to do so without requiring extended family support.

Not too surprisingly, the perverse incentive of government aid to school administration and loan brokers has made college nearly unaffordable for all.

And of course, boomers cut the tax subsidies to schools once they are out so that even without the administrative bloat, tuition would be more expensive for those who came after

Was thinking about oddities of language recently (happens a lot since moving to Germany), specifically how "toothpaste" isn't made from teeth and "tomato paste" isn't something you rub onto a tomato.

So anyway, should we be calling this "hairpaste for teeth", or "toothpaste from hair"?

I only clean my teeth with a dentifrice. I do not want to have to risk turning my teeth into paste!
