> The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.

I remember that day vividly.

It was the middle of the Great Recession, it was the worst our economy was doing in a long time. Millions were out of work. People were looking to the government to see what the plan was to get the country back on track.

A reporter asks McConnell what the senate’s number one priority was.

The answer? Not fixing the economy, not helping out every day Americans. Not finding the root cause of the crash and making sure it doesn’t happen that way again.

No, the answer was “make sure Obama is a one term president.” That’s all we would expect from the senate for the next 6 years.

The day McConnell said that, I said out loud: “I will never vote Republican again for the rest of my life.” (Prior to that point I mostly voted D but not 100% of the time.)

And I plan to keep that promise until I die.

have democrats not made similar statements about Trump, him being a danger to democracy and such?

> The company has more than 1.5 million employees across its warehouses and offices worldwide.

> This includes around 350,000 corporate workers, which include those in executive, managerial and sales roles, according to figures that Amazon submitted to the US government last year.

So roughly 4% of jobs in Amazon's corporate division disappeared. Not to downplay that the world/economy is in a bad state, but I don't think this is very catastrophic.

Slack lets you do a full export which even includes DMs depending on which plan you have.

https://slack.com/help/articles/201658943-Export-your-worksp...

When the org I was at moved away from Slack (due to costs) we used this method and wrote a little Python script to convert the main channels' JSON dumps into PDFs so we had a usable backup of channels.

why the extra step of making them into PDFs?

What you're describing is an echo chamber, when people willingly share only things that they know resonate with the group.

While still somewhat detrimental, it's at least a visible problem - everyone is aware of it because everyone sees the same thing.

With filter bubbles, you create personalized echo chambers, that nobody is aware of unless they're in there.

I honestly don't think they're that different, from a psychological point of view.

Technically, yes, but at least it's not filter bubbling everyone.

there may not be an algorithm at work here as there is on Instagram or TikTok, but there's still a bubble - the name, design and discourse of HN itself works as a filter.

I recently learned that Tiktok has a thing called "Streak Pets". Imagine taking a dopamine addiction-inducing activity and imagine gamifying that to maximize engagement in that activity. Imagine the brainstorming sessions at Tiktok where they navigate around the glaring issue of the fried brain circuitry of their own users.

> At the time, I went "WTF?" and just commented it out to get it running again. I had bigger fish to fry... and just kind of forgot about it. Everything seemed fine.

You're running a database system and you just casually comment out the configuration setting the timezone?

In what way did everything "seem fine"? SELECT 1 returned something? No further investigation required??

how is this significant? surely either the network or the GPU calculations is the bottleneck here?

The problem here is primarily Erdogan and secondarily Musk.
raziel2p · 5 months ago
The world might have people like Erdogan hold less powerful positions if large social platforms like Twitter didn't enable populism and suppression so easily.
