random_walker commented on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?    · Posted by u/ramesh31

My startup got acquired last year so I haven't interviewed anyone in a while, but my technical interview has always been:

- share your screen

- download/open the coding challenge

- you can use any website, Stack Overflow, whatever, to answer my questions as long as it's on the screenshare

My goal is to determine if the candidate can be technically productive, so I allow any programming language, IDE, autocompleter, etc, that they want. I would have no problem with them using GPT/Copilot in addition to all that, as long as it's clear how they're solving it.

I love these kind of interviews. This would very closely simulate real world on-job Performance.

No, most of them want to make a ton of money. They're hanging out virtue signaling their cleverness on a forum owned by a Silicon Valley startup incubator for a reason.

You said it better than I could have :)

Exactly. ASML made a profit of about $2,050,000,000,- in 2023. I doubt they are very interested in complaints about how some random dude expected more time to run his tests.

I think they are pretty serious about high quality software development. There are often questions and concerns from (tech/non-tech) management about build times, compute costs, software product’s performance etc. PS:I work at ASML.

I love these threads. Everyone will chime in about how they know better how to run the company, with suggestions on the processes that they don't know and so on. Meanwhile the story is "business is #1 and booming". Elegant software stacks aren't always the most important part of the business.
random_walker · 2 years ago
Exactly, I guess that's because HN has quite software-heavy crowd. Most of them like to see software changing the world.

A lot of people don’t treat home as investment. It has strong emotional value and sense of ownership where you can do (almost) anything you want with your home. There is not so much autonomy with rental properties.

Linux desktop is like democracy, it kind of sucks but is way better than the alternatives.
random_walker · 4 years ago
Like democracy, it's the least worst compared to the alternatives. :)

Note to the website developers: currency != language. I'm an American in Germany. My handle of the language isn't (yet) great, thus I still work with English primarily. However, I pay in EUR exclusively.

Just the same (not that it appears to be a problem with Framework, though it's easy to make the same mistake), country != language.

random_walker · 4 years ago
This! I live in Belgium, primarily English speaker (not native), pay in EUR and my understanding of local language is not great. Lots of websites are so difficult to use without Google translate.

Please treat Currency != Language != Country. Give options to change these.
