lol, Sure! Here’s one that was one of the crazier ones that I remember from my dad. There were a bunch of people complaining about smells coming from an apartment. The dude was a little out there and some sort of religious practitioner.

The workers were afraid of the guy, but he hadn’t really done anything except be weird and creepy. So he ended up going up with a few folks to check it out. The dude was capturing (many) wild animals and boiling their blood. So much so that it was condensating on the ceiling.

The dude opened the door and came at them with a bloody machete. He was babbling something about his mother, and I guess as it was told dad just softly said something along the lines of “Your mom sent us and she is not happy with what is happening here, and I think you know that.” I guess the guy stopped in his tracks, dropped the machete and started bawling.

He was a special guy and made a point to treat people fairly and with respect. They’d kick out drug dealers and people who’d terrorize neighbors with dogs and such. The local street dealers beat up some guy who tried to steal his car because being diligent in the buildings was keeping their families safe. He’d take me down as a kid in the summer to hang out and help out with kids programs. It was profoundly meaningful to me as I got to understand that we are all really the same.

I love this, thank you for sharing. I imagine that position gives you an exposure to humanity that many can't handle with that kind of grace and constitution. We surely need more people like him.

How do you not unflag this? This is a historic moment with the whole country watching. Not separate from technology intellectual curiosity or the world. What does it say that this discussion is being suppressed?

The problem with homeschooling is it's pretty much a crapshoot whether you end up in a weird religious environment or an abusive environment, with a long-shot chance of ending up in a fun constructive environment with lots of personalised attention and the opportunity to travel the world.

Of course, this is pretty much the same set of dice you roll when you spawn into a traditional school system, except you roll with disadvantage when it comes to the long-shot.

I don't know, I was fortunate enough to roll the long shot, and it worked out pretty well for me. Though I will echo the article's note that forming emotional attachments continues to be a bitch if you didn't have a large peer group at a young age...

mind sharing some of your experience regarding emotional attachments / social groups?

Setting aside tradition/ritual, which I don't think should count for nothing, I can think of many objective metrics on which alcohol is superior:

- Flavor

- Fills the stomach (can be a disadvantage too, but is advantageous in some situations, e.g. while waiting for dinner to be served at a party)

- Doesn't consume itself (i.e you can set down a drink and come back to it 30 minutes later)

- Easy to consume a small amount without substantially altering your mental state.

- No fire/burn risk

- Doesn't generate smoke/odor, which is unpleasant for other people and gets in your clothes/furniture

>- Flavor

This is obviously not an objective metric of superiority.

>- Fills the stomach (can be a disadvantage too, but is advantageous in some situations, e.g. while waiting for dinner to be served at a party)

Also subjective, as you realize its inconveniences and give one positive use case. In my experience this bloat is largely uncomfortable and inconvenient.

>- Doesn't consume itself (i.e you can set down a drink and come back to it 30 minutes later)

This is only true if you leave something lit that is burning, something I doubt most would do on purpose

>- Easy to consume a small amount without substantially altering your mental state.

Sister comment addresses this well

>- No fire/burn risk

Valid concern, but there are many common ways to consume weed that don't carry that risk

>- Doesn't generate smoke/odor, which is unpleasant for other people and gets in your clothes/furniture

Same as above

Ironically I think the traditions and rituals around alcohol is the best thing it has going for it, on most "objective" measures weed is regarded superior.

Climate disaster isn't an US thing. And it may strike Europe harder than the US.

railsgirls112 · 4 years ago
Climate disaster is a fundamentally global issue? I fail to see how this invalidates anything

> ...and I'll wager that the vast majority (90%-ish?) of the working-age and almost-working-age population in your country is both unqualified to write software professionally and is not interested in spending 2-4 years of their life to study CS or SE

You left out the most salient point here, most people are entirely unable to write software even if their life depended on it. Just like I doubt I'd be able to write a symphony in 4 years even with a ticking time bomb strapped to my skull.

railsgirls112 · 5 years ago
Eh, maybe at a senior dev 10x level. I'd wager that a large segment of the population is totally capable of writing relatively non complex code, given the training/resources that many software devs have (university, internships, online bootcamps, time for side projects). Just like I bet you could write a symphony in 4 years- It probably wouldn't be Mozart, but good enough to meet whatever time bomb requirements.

If you get a 10% gain in productivity, the chair/desk already paid for itself. It also replaces both a chair and a desk, so the total cost is less than $7k.

> You're talking about 1/4th of their take home salary

Over a life span of 5 years, that's less than a 10% of take-home salary. Non-Ergonomic chairs have a high future cost for your health but I guess doing that math is not humans strongest feature.

railsgirls112 · 5 years ago
10% gain in productivity =/= 10% gain in compensation, most people already have a chair/desk so replacing their function does not automatically make it cheaper. Seems like you're doing more of a math problem instead of applying this to actual people.
railsgirls112 commented on Making sense of what’s going on in the housing market   cobylefko.medium.com/no-w... · Posted by u/wyldfire

From my understanding, Canada's housing market is largely being influenced by foreign investors. I've read that lots of foreign investors are buying homes in cash, over market rate, and then letting them sit vacant.

If Canada's laws don't discourage this and others see it as a safe way to store their wealth, this could be a possible explanation for the insane rise in home costs compared to other countries.

railsgirls112 · 5 years ago
Hasn't that been the case in places like NYC for a bit now? I remember reading about like single digit occupancy rates in massive luxury apts. I'd imagine that would have only increased but would love a check on my understanding.
