The title is misleading, you get that "full local" just with the default install and model. And the default model sucks, for example this is a "person alert": https://imgur.com/a/uDCCTjr, this is just funny https://imgur.com/a/pP4ZvQI

I have a love/hate relation with Frigate, I use it since 2 years but since the business model of the developer is provide a "good model" using a custom one is not possible (at least not in a easy ways AFAIK).

I use my cameras to track a family member with a medical condition, this is why I do not feel confortable uploading those image to the "Frigate+" service to eventually get better training.

Frigate, Doubletake + Compreface is 100% local

Yes: https://github.com/blakeblackshear/frigate/releases Ctrl+F: "Face Recognition"

> Turn on face recognition & upload your first face via Face Library → Add Face.

> Train and improve accuracy: New detections appear in Face Library → Train with a confidence score-assign each to a new or existing person to refine future recognition.

Neat, I currently use Frigate with Doubletake and Compreface for facial recognition. Perhaps I can simplify it a bit

How did you get the Tapo cameras to play nice in rtsp mode with frigate? I found that even one camera did horrible things to the wifi. Even with one camera per AP per band, they caused trouble.
queuep · 5 months ago
Can you elaborate, what kind of trouble did the Tapo cameras create?

Maybe for support but it’s a real world problem unrelated to language models that they do help me with. And ordering food at a restaurant is an age old problem, I just don’t enjoy making the call personally so I got value out of using a voice agent to do it for me. I asked the staff at the restaurant and they said it was laggy so we still have to improve the experience a bit for both parties to enjoy this type of experience, not saying it’s perfect.

Could you elaborate how you actually order food like this?

The reader can feel a glimpse of the author's ego the moment he explains his skills as a Google Site Reliabiliy Engineer and his glorious work on improving gmail post-mortems right after the section where a hospital team saves various people in a mass casuality situation by empowering nurses to perform formally doctor-only tasks.

Only with a healthy dose of cynicism I can understand where he's going. While the topic of accountability sinks is quite interesting, I'm searching for the author's reflection of their own accountability.

They worked at google, made a boatload of money for the advertising company and himself, and now philosophically lectures others how to detect and/or design accountability sinks.

So the author gives what, 10 examples, and one of them is about himself and his own experiences, and one of them is from a hospital.

And from that you convey that the author must have some kind of ego? I don't think that's justified critique.

You mean giving favorable loans to companies that can then run it for profit?

I predict this will have a devastating effect on the tech industry, for obvious reasons.

To me the effects are not obvious for tech, care to elaborate?

Why would turning on the heating require cell service? If you’re out of key fob range do you really need to pre-heat the car?

The only possible use of cell service is for infotainment and even that’s questionable in a world of ubiquitous cell phones.

Schedule heating etc through their app

Yes, same for QA sometimes.. dev sets bar lower as the QA can test it. Just makes a bunch of back and forth. And when stuff breaks nobody feels responsible.

The problem with a policy like this is that in practice rich people will get antibiotics whenever they (we? hn is well off enough to cont as rich for this perk) want and everyone else suffers. It will for sure also summon the racist underbelly of the US where doctors will believe white sympathetic patients when they say how long they've been sick and question everyone else. This will deal double damage if you try to enforce any kind of quota.

I can afford to go to a nice doctor who will prioritize my comfort and who will literally tell me what to say to meet the criteria but anyone with less choice will have to fight.

queuep · a year ago
Sure, but on a global scale the rich are a small percentage of the world population.

Some countries are very restrictive on prescribing antibiotics (almost too strict) and it feels like it falls flat as you can get it over the counter in a lot of places.
