An iOS app to help manage Yard Sales. There's a lot of clutter at home that we don't need or use; using that as inspiration to work on an app that can help with cataloguing and selling in-person, and in v2 turn into some sort of facebook marketplace where users can 'find yard sales' near them (and potentially even look up all items being sold at x yard sale, prior to showing up).

Why do they all keep saying H1-B workers are underpaid? The government determines minimum pay for each application. My experience has been that this number is quite high.
prithsr · 2 years ago
The government sets payscale 'tiers' based on qualifications / roles, and these tiers determine the minimum you're able to earn once you obtain an H-1B or PERM. the employer is still able to work w/ the lawyers to get you to fall at a lesser paying tier, and also offer no further growth/compensation as they have no incentive to-- regardless of performance or structure.

Source: My exact role and bulk of responsibilities are valued at at least 2x; but given how difficult it is (for me, at least) to transition out given the job market, I have no other option but to stay or simply leave the country.

I am the same. I am searching for a career or job that will reward people like us. There is value in having a breadth of experience, knowledge, and network, but it seems harder to pitch yourself this way.

The amount of jobs I have been rejected from because I know a bit of so many things as opposed to being a master of one thing...

Genuinely so pleased with this! I'm a big fan of Rewind as a concept because, in general, I write down everything I do every day (helps with my poor memory, adhd, and in general), and a tool that can record my online-actions and facilitate search too is a game-changer for me (specially when it doesn't come with the hefty price tag).

Couple things -- 1) Do you ever plan on introducing shortcuts to toggle rem as opposed to using the menu-bar option?

2) What's storage like? Will rem's size keep getting larger and larger until I purge all? Or will I eventually get to select how long I want to 'remember' something (without manually having to 'start' and 'stop')?

3) One bug I've caught a few times is - once I toggle timeline and just slide back to view previous 'memories', >50% of the time my device won't let me exit out of the 'timeline' and I'll have to exit out of rem (cmd+opt+esc) and re-open it.

But all in all, very happy with this!

Maybe a silly question - but on the app itself, is there some sort of... tutorial of sorts? Really curious to learn how this world works but unsure where exactly to start on this app.

Usermaven.com does the same and covers product insights as well. Free tier is pretty generous (1M events per month).

Thanks for sharing this! Just got it set up on one of my domains and very pleased.

I've been using Beam for a week now - big fan. Analytics are simple enough for my personal projects, and I'm able to add custom event tracking as well which is really nice.

Though it hasn't done anything for me as of late, in my senior year of undergrad I bought a domain name from a random person online ($70). I had no actual experience or understanding of web development, and thought this would be a good excuse to learn (in hindsight, I should have purchased a domain name for significantly less money, but having something set-up already felt like a 'win'; this was a ~big investment at the time).

I learnt about WordPress, HTML, basic CSS, and consistently wrote blog posts focused on tech in general (nothing technical - more along the lines of new gadgets, apps, useful software). Flash forward to being about to graduate and looking for jobs back home, I was asked to submit some work as proof of knowledge (this position wasn't necessarily geared to "entry-level", but at least I had something to demonstrate my limited experience). In my interviews, I was asked about this blog a lot - how it started, what I've done, my knowledge of SEO concepts and so on, and I strongly believe it's the main reason I was hired.

You can change jobs while on H-1B (did it several times myself). There's certainly no lack of H-1B employees at these companies, but I don't know how many are hired directly from abroad.

1- Was the transfer a complicated process? 2- Unless you're extremely qualified, did the idea of a transfer discourage many potential employers during your job search(es)?

location and resources change every so often (i get bored / i find something else that excites me) but the cycle has traditionally been weightlifting at the gym -> spending a few months doing only cardio (for a long time it was just boxing, but recently acquired a quest 2 and not a session goes by where i'm not dripping sweat) -> home gym -> back to an actual gym. as far as benefits, i couldn't use enough words to describe how much it's helped with my mental state (specifically when i get into the zone and get consistent with it). it often becomes that one place/time where i can completely tune out, not have to talk to anyone, interact with anyone, think about anything, worry about anything.
