> First we have to close every company that depend on ads to survive. All of them.

Spoken like someone who has never built anything of value in the world. Even Apple, who famously "hates advertising and adtech companies" makes ads to promote their products. Ads exist for a reason.

Your statement is no better than "if your company emits carbon, you need to close". Sounds nice. Doesn't work

prinny_ · a day ago
“Depends on ads to survive” is wildly different from “uses ads to promote the product it depends on to survive”. Apple doesn’t generate revenue from running ads. Google does because you can pay google to promote your ads and google makes money even when your product doesn’t sell.

First of all, I really don't understand why some games require anti-cheat to even start. If someone is playing single player, or using a private server or lan, who cares! Let them cheat if they want to, or run on linux where anti-cheat isn't possible.

Secondly, unless there are monery awards for winning or something, is it really that big of a problem if people cheat? If you are playing against a stranger, is there a significant difference between playing against someone of the same skill level with cheats, and someone that is much better than you? With a good bracketing system, people who cheat will either end up against other people who cheat, or people who are good enough to play against cheaters. You could also do things like let player opt in to using anti-cheat software, and then only play against other players with anti-cheat software. Or even have arenas specifically for people who use cheating software, for people who think that makes the game more fun.

There are RPGs in which you don’t play against other people but you can interact with them to sell items. In these games being able to generate vast amounts of in game wealth creates inflation for everybody and makes it so that normal players can’t interact with the economy. With regards to your other point about separating the player base it would create fragmentation and higher queues for matchmaking. Finally keep in mind that even in single player games people compete for speed run records or world first achievements.

Switch to an iPhone.

Apple's software and services (sync, drive, photo backup etc) are so inferior, especially compared with Google's (technically speaking), you'd be anyway forced to use third party (often cross platform) solutions. No risk of going deep into Apple's ecosystem ;-)

Having used both Google and Apple for notes, calendar, docs, cloud back up (general files) and photos I have come to believe Google has the better tech but Apple has the better product. It fascinates me how Google just can’t design a simple and intuitive UI for its products, which are by all means technically superior.

I am still on windows only for some specific games that can’t run on Linux but I am constantly monitoring the state of progress on that field. I know Steam is in for the money of course and it’s in their best interest to move away from windows or at least differentiate a little, but still I am grateful for backing that horse.

Agreed. Containers are the reason I use Firefox -- they are a much better fit than profiles. But I've not been able to successfully communicate that to Chrome users. Its like their mental model is stuck, and they can't grasp the differences.
prinny_ · 5 days ago
As a Firefox user I could also say the same for other Firefox users. Every time profiles are mentioned and people mention containers it feels like they don’t get the use case. I want a dev profile with dev book marks and a daily profile with my non dev bookmarks. And I would also like dev plugins on one profile and different themes between these profiles. I believe this is something containers can’t offer.

I can agree anti-consumer behaviour is still ingrained in parts of Microsoft, as a dormant beast waiting to be Ballmer-ized for a new round.

But again, why the baseless argument based on hate?

You can (for example) de-bloat Windows 11 out from the telemetry and annoying widgets nobody uses, including the invasive Copilot.

After de-bloating, it's a decent OS on its own.

I should have the right to have a clean Windows out-of-the-box, but de-bloating is still a viable path.

prinny_ · 13 days ago
The thought that I would have to go through the trouble of reading some git repo to run a script that will debloat my OS, no matter how easy or straightforward might be, makes me feel tired. I don't want to fight my OS, I want it to work with me. Between searching and learning stuff for my job and searching and learning stuff for my personal development or hobbies, investing time in tinkering windows of all things doesn't exactly feel me with excitement. I would rather switch to Mac or invest time tinkering a linux distribution that actually respects me.

The top comments are focusing on what "know" means in the context of an LLM but I think that while it's an interesting discussion it misses the point. Even if we agree that an LLM can "know" things, the tech has been heavily advertised as nothing less that transformative. If it can't help itself from inventing non existent answers or count the number of "r"s in the word blueberry (a test I tried myself the other day on my phone's chat-gpt app, it said "three") it's not transformative.

Effective at what? Intel’s done, it’s on the Boeing trajectory, it’s just about grabbing what you can as the ship goes down.

prinny_ · 16 days ago
I highly doubt the US government will let Intel sink. I think one way or another they will bail them, either by emergency funds or through government contracts, and keep the lights on until they turn things around. For the same reasons they didn’t let Boeing die out.

I don’t get the comparison to building a house. Houses have a ton of maintenance. You can’t build a house on steady ground and leave it unattended for 20 years either. And sometimes what you need to do is not even construction type of maintenance, it’s bills, legal paperwork, replacing old furnitures just because you grew tired of that 15 year old sofa etc.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying that you don't use dependencies when using web components? Because that's usually the issue, not react itself. React doesn't really ever break backward compatibility. But yeah, if you don't use any deps, 3rd party upgrades/migrations aren't an issue.
prinny_ · 19 days ago
React itself is ok on that regard . But popular packages that are often installed in React projects very often publish breaking changes or deprecate stuff that used to be “the norm” until just a major version ago. It’s sad because the most common solution is to pin the dependencies.
