The claims are clearly exaggerated or as you say, we'd have AI companies pumping out new AI focused IDEs left and right, crazy features, yet they all are Vs code forks that roughly do the same shit

A VSCode fork with AI, like 10 other competitors doing the same, including Microsoft and Copilot, MCPs, Vs code limitations, IDEs catching up. What do these AI VsCode forks have going for them? Why would I use one?

I am validating and testing these for the company and myself. Each has a personality with quirks and deficiencies. Sometimes the magic sauce is the prompting or at times it is the agentic undercurrent that changes the wave of code.

More specific models with faster tools is the better shovel. We are not there yet.

If these ai companies had 100x dev output, why would you acquire a company? Why not just show screenshots to your agent and get it to implement everything?

Is it market share? Because I don't know who has a bigger user base that cursor.

My guess is the purchase captures the 'lessons learned' based upon production use and user feedback.

What I do not understand is that if a high level staff with capacity can produce an 80% replacement why not assign the required staff to complete that last 10% to bring it to production readiness? That last 10% is unnecessary features and excess outside of the requirements.

Assume these are for deployment to remote services - 'use deploy keys exclusively'

If the bad intent actor has access to the source code they still need to have access to push to the remote repo to issue a deployment.

If they have access to the remote repo they would then have full access to the deployment, I am not certain this is avoidable if one can edit code, push, and have the pipeline deploy as desired.

Car analogy? Key fob in the car in a locked garage. If you have access to the garage you can steal the car. Secure 'enough' for most people because the intrusion happened prior to the deploy.

Had the cost of building custom software dropped 90%, we would be seeing a flurry of low-cost, decent-quality SaaS offering all over the marketplace, possibly undercutting some established players.

From where I sit, right now, this does not seem to be the case.

This is as if writing down the code is not the biggest problem, or the biggest time sink, of building software.

I've found the best estimates are not estimates but non negotiable deadlines with fixed outcome.

"You have six weeks to do X for $$$" or "I'll get it done in six weeks or you don't pay"

Where i work there is no penalty for being late or not hitting a deadline. Life goes on and work continues. I have seen when there are specific dates and metrics and suddenly people work in focused effort and sometimes work weekends or celebrate with finishing early.

Most problems have been solved except the ability to align incentives.

Until the desired outcome is defined and documented, holding off on solutions and effort would benefit both parties.

I dunno man. When I first joined it was unconcieveable that someone could just take everything and build a trivially queryable _conversational_ (that's a big part of it) model around everything I've posted _just like that_. Call me naiive but I would consider it some sort of a social contract that you would not do that. I feel the same way about LLMs being trained on Reddit. I suspect with a large enough dataset these models can infer things about you that you wouldn't know about yourself.

To make another example, even though my reddit history is public (or was until recently because I didn't have a choice) I would still feel uneasy if I realized someone deliberately snooped through all of it. And I would be SUUUUPER uncomfortable if someone did that with my Discord history.

It's not against the rules or anything, I just think it's rude.
