pirates commented on Porn censorship is going to destroy the internet   mashable.com/article/age-... · Posted by u/Teever

I don't know, I just can't get fired up about this, I'm sorry. I don't think children have an absolute right to VPNs. There are a ton of things children can't have access to. They don't have full rights as adults, so I feel a bit ambivalent.

As someone with kids I care deeply about the harmful stuff my children will get exposure to. And I'm worried about this as a negative influence, especially to boys, much more than I'm worried about smoking, vaping, drugs, guns, and most other things. This can absolutely wreck your relationships, and it's just not practical to control on a family level. Over 25% of teenagers have ED and it's going up. That can't be good. And for girls it can lead to risky or overall degenerate behavior due to changing expectations and influence.

So many people here pretend like there's no problem.

Or maybe they think that the proposed solutions are worse than the problem.

I would rather limit myself to things I know are going to be preinstalled on the platforms I use than deal with the masochism that is scripted dependency management. No thanks.

All these comments here "Uhhh just use PythoN!" Yeah? I write scripts that need to run on macOS. No Python there. Yeah I can have my script sit there and pull the command line tools in an automated way and wait the 20 minutes it takes to install or I can pull on my big boy pants and just figure out how to do it in shell. It's turing complete. It works. Whatever.

MacOS doesn’t have python? What?
pirates commented on EPA Moves to Cancel $7B in Grants for Solar Energy   nytimes.com/2025/08/05/cl... · Posted by u/Jimmc414

I have researched several companies which knocked on my doors. All of them have accusations online of scammy behavior and not really passing the benefit of the grant.

I was told I would get "FREE SOLAR".

At least in the midwest, when I hear solar, I hear scam. I would much rather purchase equipment myself and do the install myself.

pirates · 21 days ago
This matches my experience in the midwest as well. “Let me see your bill real fast”, “you pay nothing up front”, “you can get 4% extra value at resale”

All of it is a scam. I head these people off early if I see them walking around my neighborhood.

pirates commented on Tesla must pay portion of $329M damages after fatal Autopilot crash, jury says   cnbc.com/2025/08/01/tesla... · Posted by u/koolba

This article is about autopilot which is separate from FSD and is essentially equivalent to cruise control in this context.
pirates · 23 days ago
So why is it called autopilot if it’s just cruise control? And what about “automatic piloting” doesn’t include the part where the thing drives itself?

"Why CI/CD Still Doesn't Include Continuous Documentation?" (current title) is an interesting direct translation mistake, in the question form. I see it often, and it makes sense.

English doesn't have a succinct way to frame the construct. I wonder if this form will eventually become correct.

Alternatives:

"Why (still) doesn't X do Y?"

"Why is it that X still doesn't do Y?"

"Why doesn't X do Y, still?"

All of these are awkward, but more idiomatic. Currently, at least. :)

I really appreciate that this site hides the twitter content by default and informs you that there “may” (will) be tracking enabled if you show it.

People get plenty of this outside of school. If they get it in school too, they will always be confused, like I was.

I got it in school and was not confused.
pirates commented on Backstage Is at the Peak of Its Hype   earthly.dev/blog/backstag... · Posted by u/ingve
pirates · a month ago
This largely matches my experience working with a team internally who were trying to get Backstage deployed. Or maybe I should say they got it deployed, the lead dev in charge left, and now it sits there mostly used by interns and completely un-serious people who’ve still got the idea that someday it’ll turn into this amazing must have tool that everybody will suddenly adopt.

One of the biggest problems is that they didn’t try to actually interface with other teams to sell why Backstage might be something they want to use. Instead they got it 20% populated with low hanging fruit, and the rest of the company is blissfully unaware that it even exists.
