Just migrate to Forgejo/Codeberg[1][2] or SourceHut[3]. Both are like a light speed compared to GitHub and GitLab.

My forgejo-server ran on a broken fiber for a few weeks - we're talking about speeds in the single kilobits/s. It kept up fairly well!

Pushes and pulls would still kinda work, actions not so much (but that's cause it needed to transfer more then 100MB)

The readme clearly directs the reader to the F-Droid package, which are built on their buildservers and signed with their APK keys. This does not answer the security question directly, but it's the same model as say Debian repos. There are eyeballs on it by an independent third party packagers who use code scanners and manual review to detect malfeasance, and often have to tweak builds and code to get rid of unwanted things present in some upstreams.
pietervdvn · 11 days ago
Even better: if the build is reproducable, it guarantees that the source code of the repo is the same as the version that is distributed by FDroid.

Mangrove has almost nothing in its DB, no news for years, and a broken website.

Better go with my own DB.

Or use a network with a well-designed protocol, a hosted service, 30 million users, a social graph, moderation...

pietervdvn · 21 days ago
Except that it got around 2.9K reviews by now, which is more then you have right now. Furthermore, we shouldn't further fragment the few open source review efforts we have.

Many OSM apps will also be reluctant to adopt a closed source solution that might be closed of any moment. And under what licenses will those reviews be? As MapComplete developer, I can not and will not be adopting a system based on Bluesky

Bluesky is very useful to store information on users' existing accounts.

I'm currently building a review system for my open source Web map https://cartes.app, based on Bluesky. Not trivial though, you have to create a lexicon and maintain a DB based on the Bluesky stream.

pietervdvn · 22 days ago
Wait, what? Please don't do that, use mangrove.reviews instead please. They use clear CC-BY-SA licenses; MapComplete.org uses it

Bluesky _will_ enshittify sooner or later

If you can get a discussion going with the maintainer, which is not a guarantee (cant speak to libre maintainers, but I know other projects like this), then you have to convince them that your change is both valuable and reasonable for them to maintain. The latter part there is key - they are _maintain_ers. You write the code once and then run off. If you write some new UI in some fancy framework then they have to live with it forever and learn a new framework to support it. Its a big cost for them, so on smaller projects maintainers can get defensive/grumpy
pietervdvn · 3 months ago
As such a maintainer: you hit the nail on the head.

Add to that an infinite stream of bug reports and feature requests, and it gets tiring. I don't even have the time to answer all bug reports...

I was very pleased to find Open Railway Maps includes the passenger network of Morocco, which Google and Apple lack.

OpenRailwayMap is OpenStreetMap-data, it just highlights the railway data and hides the other data.

Another way to contribute is my project https://mapcomplete.org

I'm trying to build a somewhat generic map view, which features many thematic maps (e.g. shops, restaurants, bicycle pumps, toilets, ...)

Most data comes from OpenStreetMap, but it also allows to make changes, upload pictures, show wikipedia or make reviews with mangrove.Reviews

The amount of data OSM has nowadays is a treasure. It's just a shame that there's no well done generic web frontend that would make all this data accessible in a way that could rival Google Maps. The official openstreetmap.org web site just provides bare functionality with an almost unusable search, and otherwise focuses on editing OSM data.

Probably the best generic "frontend" for OSM is Organic Maps, which however is confined to Android and iOS. I think if there would be a web version of Organic Maps, this could greatly accelerate OSM adoption.

pietervdvn · a year ago
It depends on what exactly you want. Google Maps does more then just being a map, such as navigation, streetview, reviews,...

In either case, I've heard quite some people being in love with Qwant Maps.

And I try to get to build specialized maps with https://mapcomplete.org

OSM has the potential to be the open, available source of truth for so much of our data. From there, we can simply build curated UIs that displays what we need (keep in mind that OSM is not a “map”). Opening hours for example. Today this info is either on a webpage or google maps. Sometimes contradicting each other, where a Facebook status update has the most accurate info.
