That's disappointing, they've done a great job making plant meat ubiquitous and took away some of the hippy aura that has kept many people from trying plant-based meat alternatives. I really hope they can turn it around, both selfishly as a happy customer, as well as for the planet.

What a coincidence, I also want an iPhone mini-sized iPhone :) the 12 mini is the perfect size but sadly it was the last of its kind.

There's a 13 mini

I thought that was the case but I tried going small.

I owned an iPhone 13 mini. Basically the perfect small phone if there ever was one.

The downsides are extensive and the upsides are few.

- Battery life sucked. Since a phone is a 3D object making it bigger substantially increases battery capacity. It also makes packaging difficult especially if the goal is a flagship-quality phone. Good luck fitting in good hardware with a lot of features.

- Eyestrain. It’s small.

- Typing. It sucks. The phone is small.

And it turns out the upside of one-handed operation is limited. A simple PopSocket or OhSnap! will make large phones easy to use in one hand.

Plus, if pocketability is your issue, you can buy a folding phone like a Motorola Razr and still get a nice big screen when you pull it out.

I disagree. I'm reading and typing this from an iPhone 13 mini. I use a big one for work so it's not like I don't know what I'm missing. I very strongly prefer the small form factor

Most of Meta's models have not been released as open source. Llama was a fluke, and it helps to commoditize your compliment when you're not the market leader.

There is no good or open AI company of scale yet, and there may never be.

A few that contribute to the commons are Deep Seek and Black Forest Labs. But they don't have the same breadth and budget as the hyperscalers.

That's not true, the llama that's open source is pretty much exactly what's used internally

I saw these numbers recently too and I honestly think they are fraudulent. Are they counting all the people who accidentally click on Threads as they are scrolling through their Instagram feed? I have literally never heard anyone bring up Threads in conversation, I never see it referenced on other platforms, I never see screenshots of the content there; why is this the case if so many people are using it?
phyrex · 2 months ago
Those numbers are a big legal thing because they influence share price. I don't know how exactly they're calculated and I'm sure the most positive spin is used (such as click through from instagram) but if they were actually fraudulent there'd be massive consequences. It's not like anyone is ever hesitant to sue Meta.

WhatsApp integrates into the rest of Meta ads machine so it distribute leads from facebook and instagram directly to whatsapp. It also makes money with spam.
phyrex · 2 months ago
WhatsApp makes absolutely no money with spam. There isn't a per-message cost or however you think that would work

I honestly thought it was talking about the IoT-standard Thread and was seriously confused about how this was supposed to make sense.

I had completely forgotten Facebook’s Threads even existed. I can’t see this being enough to resurrect any momentum?

phyrex · 2 months ago
There's over 350M monthly active users. Seems like plenty of momentum?

everyone saw this coming the day facebook bought it, but the real issue isn't ads in status . it's that the platform is now locked into meta's attention monetization engine. the founders explicitly said no ads. now not only ads, but paid channels, algorithmic exposure, and user segmentation creeping in. most people won't switch because of network effects, so meta can keep tightening the screws. this isn't about revenue, it's about control. they’re reshaping a private messaging tool into a broadcast platform with tracking hooks. and most users won’t even notice until it’s too embedded to undo

It's been 11 years. If they hadn't been bought they'd have found a different monetization model long ago

He'd suggest doing that more than just the blindingly obvious thing of just allowing us to turn off the algorithm and only get content from friends?

What a tool.
