Have not tries this one (yet) but Racket/base is fine for the previous books.

IIRC you can use Racket base so long as you define the “atom” function per the book authors

> It's too difficult to curb demand for things like food and housing if the population is growing.

It's also difficult (impossible) to curb demand for housing if housing is far and away the best investment you can possibly make, both in the short, medium, and long-term.

Unfortunately, so many people in the west have their net worth tied up in their homes that policies directly targeting property values is political suicide.

The best case scenario at this point for our future society is interest rate hikes causing a housing crash, then while prices are in the dumpster, put in legislation that prohibits the behaviours that have contributed to this cycle of housing mania: AirBNB/individual landlords, corporate investment in housing a la BlackRock, etc.

citation needed? genuinely curious - are there studies about long-term returns from housing vs. other asset classes (namely public equities)?

While we're talking about funding basic research - how come these independent institutes and government funding agencies don't get equity (warrants, options, whatever) in the entities that ultimately commercialize and patent this research?

I reckon they probably take some cut as a licensing fee, but seems like participating in the upside would create significant incentives over the current regimes.

I know why I don't pick them: I'm afraid of getting poisoned.

I don't buy them or grow them either: afraid of getting arrested.

I suffer from debilitating depression, anxiety, burnout, social phobia, and suicidal ideation, and the many therapists I've gone to over the decades haven't helped.

I look forward to when psychedelic therapy, which has evidence of being much more effective than conventional therapy for some conditions (like treatment-resistant depression) is legal and I don't have to risk getting thrown in jail, being poisoned by buying mystery drugs, or getting my life ruined with a felony conviction in order to get the healing that I desperately need.

If psychedelics were legal all along maybe I could have gotten some effective treatment and maybe my life would not be as fucked up as it is right now.

I don't know where you live but it's been decriminalized in plenty of places in the West, so even if it's not fully legalized the worst you face would be a nominal fine, not getting arrested.

If you are still buying groceries from supermarkets, it is in your best interest to change that habit and buy organic only. Food co-ops usually tend to store organic only so they are great places to buy your groceries.

Organic ensures that the soil where your food came from had no prohibited substances (most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides) applied for three years. Chances are, if you are buying food from supermarkets without the organic label, your food probably came from a farm that uses unhealthy synthetic fertilizers that may attribute to health issues later down the road.

Unless you know your restaurant is cooking with organic food, they are probably not so it is best to eat out sparingly and learn to cook with your own delicious food with your organic ingredients.

If you want to step up your game, you could also buy organic clothes (aka clothes that came from plants / animal) that came from soil without prohibited substances. Your body is covered most of the day so it's better to be on the healthier side.

Obviously, the label "organic" doesn't mean you are getting the best because there is still alot of room for improvement. Organic still allows some form of pesticides and fertilizers and has next to nothing about the organic matter in your soil (which determine how nutritious your food would be).

The article mentions regenerative organic certification, which addresses the shortcomings for organic labels. If we, as consumers, demand for the highest quality food, it turns out to be good for the soil and the long term health of the earth too!

Hands down, if you have a space for your own garden or even pots at home, you could easily grow food that are more nutritious than any food you can find in a grocery store. Optimize for organic matter in your soil. The higher the organic matter, the more nutritious your food is. Most of the agricultural soil that grows food has about 3-6% organic matter, you can easily get it above 10% at home. So if you have time on your hands, you should try growing the food you eat most regularly at home.

Setting aside the environmental concerns (which are important, and indirectly health-adjacent), are there material health reasons to eat organic? This Mayo Clinic article [0] points to pretty minor improvements, would love if someone could point me to evidence substantiating OP's claim, or maybe which products in particular are materially healthier if produced organically.

I’m all for dual citizenships, but a downside nobody’s talking about is that you have to spend 5-10 years of your life in your new country to get it, not factoring in multi-year waiting times that may exist for processing citizenship. Essentially, you need to be comfortable migrating.
pbk1 · 5 years ago
You can accelerate 5-10 years to 3 months using pay for citizenship schemes. For example Grenada has one where you get citizenship and a passport in return for "donating" $150k USD to the government. Grenada's is interesting because you get visa-free access to China. Antigua and Barbuda are running a "50% off sale" (I kid you not..) where the cost is only $100k USD (normally $200k USD)

This is where the US is heading if we continue our down our current path. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft started sending data from linkdin to the credit agencies.
pbk1 · 5 years ago
Lenders can and do buy this kind of data to underwrite their borrowers (credit cards, BNPL, student loans, mortgages, etc.). They don't need to get it from credit bureaus. Anyone who is underwriting off of bureau data alone is a decade (or more) behind state of the art at this point.

AKA email.

If Trump has been kicked off Twitter, there's nothing stopping him from providing an email newsletter where people can sign-up and recieve his crazy ramblings.

Seriously wondering why people don't do this. Perhaps I shouldn't be giving Trump any ideas?

pbk1 · 5 years ago
Don't worry, his newsletter providers are deplatforming him too.[0]

Look into the TIP[0] skill from dialectical behavior therapy. In particular I've found the cold water triggering a dive response[1] very effective at calming me down when I face acute anxiety.
