> Based on our research, we found out that more than half of you have 4+ tabs open all the time, and some of you have more, a lot more.

This is surprising. I rarely have over three tabs ever, and i usually like to keep it at one. If i really need to multitask that many things I'd prefer to open another window and either splitscreen or move it to a different workspace.

I don't like the redesign. I think I'll be moving to brave or ungoogled-chromium despite my dislike for chromium dominance.

I am in the same boat with you on the number of tabs, but I love the new redesign. I am not sure how this is enough of an issue for anybody to jump browsers.

So if that is the mental state of half the country - is democracy worth defending? Why not just ban wrong-think and come out and admit that authoritarianism is the best, since too many people are too stupid to make the right decisions?
pavanky · 5 years ago
Because we are faulty creatures with faulty institutions. Let us work with what we have. Authoritarianism is mostly never better than democracy. Absolute democracy isn't always better than authoritarianism. And in this case it is largely irrelevant because the government is not the one censoring people.

The arguments about if and when companies can exercise these rights are good to have otherwise we may end up in one of the extremes.

Regardless of what you believe to be 'The Truth', has suppression or censorship ever worked to quench dissonance or convince skeptical people, again, whether right or wrong, that there really is 'nothing to see here'.

Spam filters worked plenty fine over email.

We are very fortunate to have the algorithms, employees & management of Youtube/Google watching out for us. We're not intelligent enough to view a video and decide for ourselves what is fact v. propaganda v. entertainment. Hopefully some day we will have the same protections the CCP gives its people with even more content moderation. Thank you Google - you're the nanny the American people and the world always hoped for.

You say this while half the country believes random people on Youtube and Facebook, refuse to wear masks in a pandemic that is killing people by the thousands.

I was young and believer in open internet once (and still am mostly) but the society as a whole has underestimated how much people are susceptible to being deceived and the cost differential between spreading and refuting false information.

I don't see this as anything other than an extension of anti-spam over email efforts of early 2000s.

I've found that if ChromeOS would suit a user's needs, so would a polished distribution like Ubuntu with a browser like Firefox or Chrome.
pavanky · 5 years ago
Yes but its cheaper and battery life is great and the user doesnt have to worry about upgrades.

If you want to get a Linux based laptop for casual users and dont want to maintain it, just get them a chromebook.

It is also a good everyday machine I can use to ssh into my desktop for real work.

Huh, you are saying that something that is so important you want for free, and that the company building this product for you should forgo money and work simply for free? Wouldn't the opposite make far more sense that something that is so important you should pay 'more' for? They are free options that you are welcome to, but for people who want more they pay for it.
pavanky · 5 years ago
"Free" doesnt always mean "Free beer",

"Free Software" has a specific (and different meaning) than Open source.

https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html

I think this is what OP meant not wanting their software to be available at no cost.

The reasonable person inside me wants to use a password manager, yet the paranoid in my brain is terrified. I read all those texts explaining why password managers are better, yet I am still afraid. I keep thinking in attack vectors such as someone compromising the Play Store and submitting a malicious app or other similar stuff.

I even have a Bitwarden account and have some passwords stored on it.

I also considered "offline" managers like KeepassXC, but synchronization gets way worse, and there's also the issue about trusting someone else with your mobile apps.

I will probably end up convincing myself and keep using Bitwarden more at some point, but I will also probably do some kind of password peppering/salting along with it.

Am I really the only one here?

pavanky · 5 years ago
I use keepass + dropbox for syncing. You can replace dropbox with another syncing mechanism of choice, but this works out great.

YouTube premium has 20mm paying users. Educated guess most of users consume through a mobile device.

Biggest issue with Quibi was lack of app for TV. They cut their TAM by only focusing on Mobile. I don’t think YouTube premium would be as popular if it was only for 1 platform.

pavanky · 5 years ago
I originally got youtube premium because I was already paying for Google music.

But I'd say 90% of my youtube consumption is on TV.

Without reading the whole IFR, what would be the minimum pay for h1b holder? Will it make harder for entry level F1 OPT students?
pavanky · 5 years ago
I think this can potentially affect startups who may want to hire H1bs at a lower than prevailing wage for their area(even if they are paying their American colleagues the same amount).

Other than that, the biggest issue might be to IT consulting companies (mostly based in India) that tend to have their employees work at a lower rate than tech companies.

At what cost? $50/hr?
pavanky · 5 years ago
I am on H1B (bay area last 4 years, Atlanta 6 years) and my total compensation is significantly higher than that.
