An e ink phone already exists, in reality. I don’t know why you would hold out hope for a Kickstarter.

I own the Light Phone 2 and do like it a lot, but it's a bit too limited and some of the promises of Minimal would solve some of the pain points that Light hasn't managed to, so I definitely see the appeal.

But everything I've seen indicates that Minimal is going to be heavily delayed, if it's not an outright scam. Meanwhile, the Light Phone 2 has been around for years now, and they're planning to release updated hardware later this year.

They were still making major design changes just one week ago (first completely removing, then providing a front-facing camera option after previously changing the screen dimensions and device form factor). There's basically no way it ships on their timeline (currently Sept 2024), if it ships at all. They nailed the slick marketing, but have been full of nonsensical timelines and promises.

With everyone saying how great the "put down websites with ads is" there are exceptions (few probably)

One of them being vietnamcoracle.com, which is, without a doubt the best travel website for Vietnam (if you like to really go deeper.) None of the content is sponsored, just relevant ads (here you can rent a bike, book a tour etc) and they are discrete in general.

Between him researching new destinations and writing / updating/ replying to comments he just doesn't have a lot of time for the classic "money making job + sideproject".

I just imagine (hope) he's not the only website like that out there.

I don't currently use kagi but would prefer if there was an option to filter by ad type (everyone hates pop ups) and amount.

Anyway just my 2c.

With wolfram and the llm + more users I'm hopeful that in the longer term the price will go down and/or stay at 10$ over the longer term.

Hopefully the defaults handle nuance like you mentioned, but one of the other benefits of Kagi is you can boost/de-boost domains, so you can correct for things even if they're using an overly blunt approach. If enough people do that, it'll also bubble up on the leaderboard: https://kagi.com/stats?stat=leaderboard&k=1

Or click the clock.

op12op12 · 4 years ago
Which kind of goes back to the earlier point:

> I don't understand what I'm supposed to do to make it behave in a way that makes sense.

There used to be an actual icon for it to the right of the clock. Why would someone think to click on the clock to access their notifications? This apparently also led to the clock becoming mandatory instead of being able to hide it if you wanted to use different options.

So Gates is not alone. Buffet and Ellison have both pledged the vast majority of their wealth to the Gates Foundation. Somewhat unique to the US, our billionaires tends to be fairly philanthropic.

The latest Patriot Act episode did a great deep dive into why this is true, particularly in the US.

Ok, but what on this list actually requires an internet connection? I guess the integration with your power company. But aside from that?

You could put a local AI model into the Nest, and it shouldn't need to talk to the internet at all. It can keep the data locally, and be programmed to draw inferences without help from the mothership.

For some reason we've decided it's ok to gratuitously connect everything to the internet "just cause". Sort of like how data maximization has become a thing because the costs are low, so why not?

op12op12 · 6 years ago
Just taking a guess...besides integration with the power company, an internet connection can be useful for plenty of things. Weather forecasts and aggregating local user behavior to improve predictions of how to adjust settings more accurately over time. Talk to your mobile device to know when you're getting near home to pop out of an eco mode. A heartbeat to the cloud so it can notify you when the power is out. Lots of possibilities you wouldn't get with a local-only mode.

I trained a model on Isaac Asimov stories to produce 3-panel webcomics that get served onto a Twitter feed a couple of times a day. If you'd like, I can share it and you can check it out!

So basically, if I get a Fake ID (or just do some simple photoshop) I can become a verified buyer on KitSplit. Add in a prepaid Visa card and I can "buy" any camera/drone I want for $100?

Tech companies need to start to accept some liability for the problems they are causing.

Edit: I have a verified fake name. Now I'm waiting to see if they accept my photoshopped ID images.

Edit 2: I now also have a verified Government ID. Here is a screenshot of my totally legit verified profile. https://i.imgur.com/dr61qN5.png

I also one of those terrible Android users that pretty much populates my phone with just free apps. Navigating play to sort out the free from the paid apps is an unbelievable chore. I'm not going to buy an app when I'm looking for free ones, period. Having no way to simply browse free apps makes the play store so unusable that I never actually go to it.

On the occasion that I do want to buy an app, I never find it through the store either, it's 100% a referral from someplace else.

op12op12 · 12 years ago
What are you talking about? It's very easy both on the phone and on the desktop to browse free apps and games.

Good point re point of failure. If LinkedIn doesn't put a lot of resources into the proxy servers, mail delivery could be very slow or fail completely.

I"m still impressed with the creativity from a technical standpoint.

op12op12 · 12 years ago
Even if it has a lot of resources behind it, if it experienced an outage, the end user would be unaware that their mail service is still up, and since they didn't change the settings, they wouldn't know they could remove the proxy to access their mail until the outage is resolved.
