The good thing about the Remarkable is that it’s basically just a Linux machine and you have root access. There’s a great community of folk building extra functionality and tools / apps for it.

And backed by popular support.

It’s another good example of internet sentiment being far different to popular sentiment.

Polling shows around 70% supported it, though far fewer thought it would be effective. Pretty much matches my views on it.

When I told my wife this, her immediate reaction was - “oh no, the families with 2 or more children that needs a bigger car will be penalized because of the SUVs driven by those who don’t need it”. And I said may be this is a two birds one stone moment.

Give out SUV passes to those families with 2 or more children, and make it absurdly expensive for the rest. This way either you help increase the birth rate in EU or pay for the luxury of driving a huge thing on the road disproportionate to others.

I see the article didn’t go about that way, and didn’t even apply for residents. Just for the tourists…. Meh.

Is an SUV needed for two children? I can accommodate my two children (and the dog if required) in my smallish hatchback.

I wonder, do you still need to pay their ridiculous subscription plan just to access Dropbox sync?

See previous discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29000674

okuntilnow · 3 years ago
Possibly, but it's not really sync anyway. You can pull and push documents, but there's no synchronisation.

Not worth paying extra for.

What about latency?
okuntilnow · 3 years ago
Writing latency on the current generation of eink devices is good enough not to be noticeable.

I'd really like a device like this, but it's just too expensive. After adding the pen and possibly a cover, we're in the $500s. Too steep I think.
okuntilnow · 3 years ago
If you buy the accessories third-party, the cost of the device is cheaper than most other 10" eink writing pads.

Huginn is an another useful tool that allows you to wrangle CSS selectors and XPath nodes to create RSS feeds.

I use it quite successfully to get data out of undocumented APIs and out into RSS.

okuntilnow commented on Ask HN: What Happened to Pinboard (Dec '22 edition)?    · Posted by u/danparsonson

I use, like and pay for Pinboard. I don't use the archiving feature though - it's just a dump for links, and it does that very well.

I do worry that it's going to go kaput from neglect at some point, so it would be nice to see a bit of development and get these issues fixed. But either way the level of outrage here is a bit OTT. It's not life or death, it's just bookmarks.

I paid off and on through the years but for me it was when they started selling physical products and advertising them in the app. I can't remember what they were. T-shirts? Mousepads?
okuntilnow commented on Ask HN: What social media site could replace Twitter?    · Posted by u/s3v
okuntilnow · 3 years ago
Personally, I don’t think we need a twitter replacement. Mastodon is nice, but ultimately suffers from the same problems but at smaller scale.

I think it’s more likely that users will move to smaller communities - Discord, Telegram & WhatsApp groups etc.

I’m surprised that Whatsapp hasn’t developed better community functions.
